How this instrument works
Valentine's Day falls on a fixed month and day, February 14, every year, but 'how many days away is it' constantly changes depending on where today sits relative to that date. Right after Valentine's Day passes, the count jumps to nearly a full year; as the date approaches again, it shrinks back down.
This instrument checks whether February 14 of the current year has already happened. If today hasn't reached it yet, it counts straight from today to this year's February 14. If Valentine's Day has already passed for the year, it rolls forward and counts to next year's February 14 instead — so the answer is always the distance to the next Valentine's Day, never one already behind you.
The year attached to the target date field doesn't affect the count at all; it exists only so the date field holds a complete, valid calendar date. This instrument uses the same day-counting logic as this site's Birthday Countdown, Anniversary, and Days Until Christmas instruments, just defaulted and labelled for February 14 specifically — useful for planning restaurant bookings and flower or gift shipping, since both tend to book up as the date closes in.

Worked example — counting forward from late July

February 14, 2026 already passed back in the winter, so the instrument rolls forward and counts to February 14, 2027 instead. Days until the next Valentine's Day (Feb 14) reads 201.
A mid-year starting point like late July is a good check on the rollover logic specifically, since it's the case where the current year's occurrence has already passed and the countdown has to reach all the way into the following year to find the next one.

Does the year I enter in the Valentine's Day field matter?
No — only the month and day, February 14, matter. That field needs a complete date to be valid, so it comes pre-filled with a placeholder year, but changing that year has no effect on the countdown at all.
What does the instrument show on Valentine's Day itself?
It rolls forward to next year. Once today's date matches February 14, there's no remaining gap in the current year to count, so the countdown switches to measuring toward next year's February 14 — reading 365 or 366 days depending on whether a leap day falls in between.
