How this instrument works
New Year's Day falls on a fixed month and day, January 1, every year, but 'how many days away is it' constantly changes depending on where today sits relative to that date. Right after the new year begins, the count jumps to nearly a full year; as December closes in, it shrinks back down toward the countdown everyone recognizes on New Year's Eve.
This instrument checks whether January 1 of the current year has already happened. If today hasn't reached it yet, it counts straight from today to this year's January 1. If New Year's Day has already passed for the year — which, for most of the calendar year, it has — it rolls forward and counts to next year's January 1 instead, so the answer is always the distance to the next New Year's Day, never one already behind you.
The year attached to the target date field doesn't affect the count at all; it exists only so the date field holds a complete, valid calendar date. This instrument uses the same day-counting logic as this site's Birthday Countdown and Days Until Christmas instruments, just defaulted and labelled for January 1 specifically — useful for planning a countdown party, a fireworks display, or simply timing when a set of New Year's resolutions officially starts.

Worked example — counting forward from late July
Enter today's date 2026-07-28, with New Year's Day left at its default of January 1 (the placeholder year of 1990 in that field doesn't matter). January 1, 2026 already happened back at the start of the year, so the instrument rolls forward and counts to January 1, 2027 instead. Days until the next New Year's Day (Jan 1) reads 157.
A mid-year starting point like late July is a good check on the rollover logic specifically, since it's the case where the current year's January 1 is already long past and the countdown has to reach all the way into the following year to find the next one.

Does the year I enter in the New Year's Day field matter?
No — only the month and day, January 1, matter. That field needs a complete date to be valid, so it comes pre-filled with a placeholder year, but changing that year has no effect on the countdown at all.
What does the instrument show on New Year's Day itself?
It rolls forward to next year. Once today's date matches January 1, there's no remaining gap in the current year to count, so the countdown switches to measuring toward next year's January 1 — reading 365 or 366 days depending on whether a leap day falls in between.
Can I check the countdown as of a date other than today?
