A gallon of deck stain doesn't cover the same ground twice. The first coat soaks into bare, thirsty wood and gets used up fast, while a second or third coat lands on wood whose pores are already partially filled — so it spreads noticeably further, commonly cited as around 50% more coverage per gallon than the first coat. A calculator that just multiplies area by coats and divides by one flat coverage rate overstates how much stain a multi-coat job actually needs.
This instrument splits the two cases apart. It divides the deck's area by the entered coverage rate to get the first coat's gallons, then adds each additional coat's gallons using that same coverage rate boosted by 1.5x to reflect the partially-sealed-wood effect. The two amounts sum to a total, which is rounded up to a whole gallon — stain is sold by the can, not the fraction.
Coverage rate itself is not a fixed constant — it's a typical, product-dependent figure. Worked example — a 320 sq ft deck, two coats

Does this account for stain soaked up by end grain or rough-sawn wood?
Not directly — this calculator applies one coverage rate uniformly across the entered area. Deck boards' cut ends and any rough-sawn or heavily weathered sections absorb noticeably more stain than a smooth board face, so if your deck has a lot of exposed end grain or rough lumber, consider lowering the entered coverage rate (fewer sq ft per gallon) to build in a buffer, or simply buy one extra can.
How many coats does a new deck actually need?
Most bare, sanded, or freshly stripped wood needs two coats for full color and weather protection, since one coat rarely builds enough film to block UV and moisture evenly.
