How this instrument works
Fire glass is tempered, rounded glass sold as a decorative and heat-safe substitute for lava rock or gas logs over a propane or natural gas burner. Because it's sold by weight, not volume, figuring out how much to buy means converting your fire pit or burner pan's area and desired fill depth into pounds using the glass's bulk density — how much a given volume of the loose, rounded pieces actually weighs once poured in.
This instrument multiplies the pit or pan's area by the fill depth and by an entered coverage rate (pounds needed per square foot of area per inch of depth), giving total pounds needed directly. The default coverage rate, 7.488 lb per sq ft per inch, comes from a widely used vendor formula (pounds = length × width × depth in inches × 0.052, which works out to the same 7.488 figure once converted to a per-square-foot basis) implying roughly 90 lb per cubic foot of bulk density for standard fire glass.
That coverage rate is a typical default, not a fixed physical constant — real bulk density varies by glass type, since reflective, tumbled, or larger-format fire glass packs and weighs differently than standard sharp-cut fire glass. Always check your specific product's coverage guidance if the manufacturer provides one, and note that for a gas burner, glass depth over the burner pan itself is usually capped around 1in regardless of the surrounding pit's fill depth, to keep the flame getting enough oxygen.

Fire glass needed (lb) comes to 9 × 2 × 7.488 = 134.784 lb — a little over 130 lb of fire glass to fill this pit to a 2in depth, before rounding up to whatever package sizes the glass is actually sold in.

Why is fire glass sold by weight instead of volume?
Because loose, rounded glass pieces pack and settle differently than a rigid volume like a poured slab, so weight is a more consistent, verifiable way for a retailer to sell a specific quantity than a volume claim would be. This calculator still starts from a volume concept (area times depth) but converts it to pounds using the glass's bulk density, matching how the product is actually priced and shipped.
How deep should I fill my fire pit with fire glass?
A depth of around 2 to 4 inches is a common range for a deeper firebox, while a shallower tray or pan-style burner more often uses 1.5 to 2 inches. If your fire pit uses a gas burner, keep the glass directly over the burner pan itself around 1 inch deep or less regardless of the surrounding pit depth, since burying the flame under too much glass restricts the oxygen it needs to burn cleanly.
Why does the coverage rate matter so much?
Because it directly scales the result — a coverage rate is a stand-in for the glass's real bulk density, and different fire glass types (standard sharp-cut, tumbled, reflective, or larger nugget sizes) pack to different weights per cubic foot. Do I need to fill the entire pit, or just cover the burner?
That depends on your fire pit's design — some setups only need glass covering the burner pan itself, while others fill the entire visible pit area for a fuller look, with the burner pan sitting recessed within that larger area. Measure whichever area you're actually planning to fill (burner pan only, or the whole pit) and enter that as the Fire pit / burner area input.
Can I mix fire glass with lava rock or other fill to save on cost?
Many fire pit owners do exactly this — using a cheaper base fill like lava rock or fire glass fragments in the depth range that's out of sight, then topping only the visible upper layer with the more expensive decorative fire glass. If you're doing this, calculate the decorative top layer separately using a shallower fill depth (its actual visible thickness) rather than the pit's full depth, since this calculator assumes uniform fire glass through the entire entered depth.
