How this instrument works
Life expectancy for dogs is usually quoted as a single round number — '10 to 13 years,' 'about a decade' — because most sources are extrapolating from small samples or breed-club folklore rather than counting actual deaths. The 2022 VetCompass UK study behind this instrument did something different: it built formal life tables, the same statistical method used for human actuarial data, from 30,563 dogs who died at 886 UK veterinary clinics between 2016 and 2020. Life expectancy at birth for each breed is the number of years a newborn dog of that breed would be expected to live if current age-specific death rates held constant across its whole life — not an average of ages at death in the sample, which would be skewed by how old the surviving population happens to be.
This calculator is a direct lookup, not a computed estimate: pick a breed from the list, and the number you see is the exact figure the paper published for that breed, to two decimal places. There is no interpolation, no rounding beyond what the study itself reported, and no formula converting inputs into an output — the 'calculation' is selecting which published figure applies.
The catch, and the reason this list is short: VetCompass UK only published breed-specific life tables for a handful of breeds with enough deaths in the dataset to support a reliable estimate, plus the population-wide average. This tool offers exactly those six options — the UK-wide average and five named breeds — and nothing else. It does not extrapolate a figure for your dog's breed if that breed isn't one of the six, because the study didn't publish one, and inventing a number for an unlisted breed would misrepresent what this data actually shows.

Worked example — comparing two breeds at opposite extremes
Selecting Jack Russell Terrier returns 12.72 years — the longest published life expectancy at birth of any breed in the VetCompass UK dataset. Switching the dropdown to French Bulldog returns 4.53 years, the shortest of any breed the study reported, and less than half the terrier's figure.
That eight-year gap is not noise — both numbers come from the same study, the same clinics, and the same 2016-2020 window, so the difference reflects a real, well-documented health burden in brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds like the French Bulldog rather than any inconsistency in how the figures were derived. Selecting 'All breeds combined' instead returns 11.23 years, the UK-wide population average across all 30,563 dogs — a figure that sits closer to the terrier's end because most dogs in the dataset were not short-lived brachycephalic breeds.

Why are only five breeds and one overall average available?
Because those are the only figures the source study published. VetCompass UK analyzed 30,563 dogs but only reported breed-specific life expectancy for breeds with enough recorded deaths in the dataset to produce a statistically reliable life table, alongside the population-wide average. This calculator deliberately offers only the breeds the paper itself named — Jack Russell Terrier, French Bulldog, Yorkshire Terrier, Border Collie, and English Springer Spaniel — rather than guessing or interpolating a figure for any other breed.
Why did the French Bulldog score so much lower than the other breeds?
The VetCompass UK study found French Bulldogs had a life expectancy of just 4.53 years at birth, markedly shorter than every other breed it reported. This is consistent with well-documented health issues tied to the breed's brachycephalic (flat-faced) skull shape, which is linked to breathing difficulty, heat intolerance, and a range of other conditions that increase mortality risk. It reflects the population of dogs recorded at UK veterinary clinics during 2016-2020, not a claim about any individual dog.
Is this the same as saying my dog will live exactly this long?
No. Life expectancy at birth is a population-level statistic — the average lifespan a newborn dog of that breed would be expected to reach if current age-specific death rates held steady. An individual dog's actual lifespan is shaped by genetics, body weight, neuter status, home environment, and veterinary care, and can land well above or below the published figure. Treat this number as a benchmark for the breed, not a forecast for one specific dog.

Does this apply outside the UK?
Not necessarily. The dataset is drawn entirely from UK veterinary clinical records, and life expectancy can vary by country due to differences in climate, veterinary care access, common causes of death, and even which mixes of breeds are popular. Treat these figures as UK-specific population data rather than a universal global benchmark.
