How this instrument works
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) grades ability on a six-step scale from A1 (beginner) to C2 (mastery). Language schools commonly attach a cumulative 'guided learning hours' figure to each step — a rough estimate, built from classroom-based instruction data, of how many hours of structured study it typically takes to progress from zero to that level.
This calculator uses a rounded version of the widely cited Cambridge Assessment English figures: about 100 hours to reach A1, 200 to A2, 400 to B1, 600 to B2, 800 to C1, and 1,000 to C2 — each a cumulative total from the very start, not an incremental figure per level. The published ranges run a little wider (for example, C2 is commonly cited as 1,000–1,200 hours); this calculator anchors to the lower end of each published range for a clean, round set of benchmarks.
These figures assume a learner already fluent in a related European language, the population the original Cambridge data was built around — reaching the same CEFR level typically takes meaningfully longer for a learner whose native language is linguistically more distant from English. Guided learning hours also specifically mean structured, instructor-led study; hours spent on immersion, casual exposure, or self-directed practice aren't measured the same way and may progress a learner faster or slower depending on the person.

Worked example — reaching B2 at three lessons a week
Targeting B2 requires 600 cumulative guided-learning hours in this calculator's table. At 3 lessons a week, 60 minutes each, that's 3 hours of study a week: 600 ÷ 3 = 200 weeks needed.
200 weeks converts to roughly 46 months (200 ÷ 4.348 = 45.998) — just under four years at that pace. Doubling the weekly study time to 6 hours a week would cut that in half, to 100 weeks, or a little under two years — the calculator updates both figures instantly if you change the lesson inputs.
Questions
What exactly are "guided learning hours"?
It's an estimate of the total structured, instructor-led study time — classroom hours, guided lessons, or similarly directed instruction — typically needed to progress from zero ability to a given CEFR level. It specifically measures guided instruction time, not calendar time, immersion exposure, or self-study, which is why the field asks for lessons per week rather than total hours spent 'around' the language.
Why does this calculator use round numbers instead of the published ranges?
The commonly cited Cambridge-style figures are themselves ranges (for example, 1,000–1,200 hours for C2), not single fixed numbers, because actual progress varies by learner. This calculator anchors to the lower bound of each published range to give one clean, consistent benchmark per level rather than forcing you to pick a number within a range yourself.
Does self-study or immersion count the same as guided lessons?
Not necessarily — the hours figures here specifically describe structured, guided instruction, and immersion or casual self-study hours don't map onto the same scale in a well-established way. Some learners progress faster with heavy immersion, others need more structured guidance; treat this calculator's output as a guided-study benchmark, not a total-exposure-time prediction.
How accurate is this for a learner whose native language isn't European?
Less accurate, and predictably so: the underlying data assumes learners who already speak a European language, since that was the population Cambridge's own guided-hours estimates were built from. Learners starting from a more linguistically distant native language typically need substantially more guided hours to reach the same CEFR level — this calculator doesn't adjust for that, so treat the output as a floor rather than a universal figure.
Can I reach a level faster by simply studying more hours per week?
Within this calculator's math, yes — the weeks-needed figure scales inversely with your weekly study time, so doubling your weekly hours halves the estimated weeks. In reality, learning efficiency per hour can also vary with lesson quality, spacing, and review, which this simple linear model doesn't capture; treat the output as a planning estimate, not a guarantee.
