This calculator takes that flat daily range — low, average, and high — and divides each figure by the number of pumping sessions entered, giving a rough per-session output range. It is not scaled to any individual baby's weight or age within the exclusively-breastfed window, and it is not personalized to how much milk any particular parent actually produces; it simply reflects what the same population-level daily total looks like spread across more or fewer sessions.
Real pumping output varies a great deal from session to session and from person to person — time of day, stress, pump fit and suction, how recently the baby last fed, and how well let-down is triggered can all move a single session's output well outside these ranges. A lower-than-expected result at any one session does not by itself indicate low milk supply, and these figures are meant as a general reference for setting expectations, not a target every session needs to hit.

Worked example — 8 sessions and 6 sessions a day
Pumping 8 times a day spreads the population-average 750 mL/day figure into 750 ÷ 8 = 93.75 mL per session on average, with a low-to-high range of 562 ÷ 8 = 70.25 mL to 887 ÷ 8 = 110.875 mL per session — a wide band, reflecting how much normal daily output varies across the underlying research population, not just across sessions.
Pumping only 6 times a day spreads the same daily totals across fewer sessions, raising the average per-session estimate to 750 ÷ 6 = 125.0 mL, with a range of 562 ÷ 6 ≈ 93.7 mL to 887 ÷ 6 ≈ 147.8 mL. The daily totals themselves don't change with session count — only how that same total gets divided up does, which is why fewer, longer sessions tend to show a higher per-session number than more frequent, shorter ones.
