How this instrument works
Home pregnancy tests detect human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone that rises steadily in blood and urine after a fertilized egg implants — but that rise takes time, and testing too early means hCG may not yet be concentrated enough for a test strip to register it, even in a real pregnancy. That's why the same test can miss an early pregnancy tested five days before a missed period but reliably catch it on the day of the missed period itself.
The detection percentages shown here come from First Response's own published clinical study of its Early Result home pregnancy test, testing early-pregnancy urine samples at set numbers of days before the expected period. It's worth being clear about what kind of source that is: it's manufacturer-sponsored and manufacturer-published data for one specific test and its specific sensitivity threshold, not an independent, peer-reviewed academic study — though it's the figure most mainstream health sources cite for exactly this question. Other test brands, with different sensitivity thresholds, and other people, with different individual hCG rise rates, won't track these exact numbers.
Even the highest figure shown — about 99% detection from 3 days before the expected period onward — is not 100%. hCG rise is individual: some real pregnancies simply produce measurable hCG later than others. A negative result before or right around the expected period doesn't rule out pregnancy; standard advice is to test again after a missed period if the first test was negative, and to see a doctor if pregnancy is still suspected despite a negative result.

Worked example — testing at 5, 4, and 0 days before the expected period
Testing 5 days before the expected period, the cited study reports about 76% detection — meaning roughly 1 in 4 real pregnancies wouldn't yet show a positive result at that point, purely because hCG hasn't risen enough yet.
Testing just one day later, 4 days before the expected period, detection jumps to about 96% — hCG rises quickly during this window, so even a single extra day makes a real difference.
Testing on the day of the expected period itself (or any day from 3 days before it onward), detection reaches about 99%. That's the highest figure in the study, but it's still not certain: a small share of real pregnancies won't yet be detectable even then, which is why a negative result around this time is usually followed by retesting after a missed period rather than treated as final.

Do these numbers apply to every pregnancy test brand?
No. They're specific to one test's published sensitivity threshold. Other brands, with different sensitivity thresholds, will have somewhat different detection rates at the same number of days before the expected period, though most home tests follow a broadly similar pattern of rising detection as the expected period approaches.
Why would a real pregnancy produce a negative test result?
Most often because hCG hasn't yet risen to a concentration the test can detect — this can happen from testing too early relative to ovulation and implantation timing, or because an individual's hCG is rising more slowly than average. Diluted urine and user error (not following the test's instructions, misreading the timing window) can also produce a false negative.
Can this calculator tell me if I'm pregnant?
No. It only reports the published detection-rate figure for a given testing day from the cited clinical study — it doesn't take an actual test result as input and can't assess any individual's likelihood of pregnancy.
What should I do if this test is negative but I still think I might be pregnant?
Standard guidance is to test again after your period is due, since hCG continues to rise and detection improves closer to and after the expected period. If your period doesn't arrive, or you have symptoms that concern you, seeing a doctor is the appropriate next step regardless of what a home test shows.
