How this instrument works

The yard has been three feet for as long as English measure has been written down. An English statute of about 1300, the Composition of Yards and Perches, already set three feet to the yard and five and a half yards to the rod, and no reform since has disturbed that ratio. What the twentieth century changed was the size of the units, not the relationship between them: the 1959 international yard and pound agreement pinned the yard at exactly 0.9144 metre, which makes the foot exactly 0.3048 metre and leaves three of them per yard with nothing left over.

Because the ratio is three to one, going down from feet is a division by three, and a third has no finite decimal form. The factor this sheet applies, 0.333333333333, is that third stopped at the twelfth place — close enough that the error sits around one part in a trillion, far below the width of any pencil line you would draw on timber. Dividing by 3 instead gives the identical answer with no truncation at all, which is worth remembering if you are checking long bills of quantities by hand.

The two units survive in different corners of the same countries, which is why the crossing is needed so often. Gridiron football counts in yards — a hundred between the goal lines, ten for a first down — while the crew that graded the field worked in feet and inches. A cricket pitch is 22 yards, one old surveyor's chain, wicket to wicket. British road signs still count down in yards under a quarter mile. Carpet, upholstery cloth and webbing are sold by the linear yard in the United States, though the rooms they cover are always measured in feet.

The check is easy to carry in your head: 30 ÷ 3 = 10, no remainder. Strictly, the twelve-place factor lands on 9.99999999999, one hundred-billionth of a yard short, and that rounds to 10 at any display precision tape measures could justify. A chain crew on a football sideline leans on the same identity — their chain is ten yards of steel links, which is thirty feet of hallway laid straight.

Is a yard exactly three feet?

Yes, exactly — by definition rather than by measurement. The 1959 international yard and pound agreement fixed the yard at 0.9144 metre and the foot at 0.3048 metre, and 0.9144 divided by 0.3048 is 3 with nothing left over. The same whole-number relationship runs through the rest of the system: 36 inches to the yard, and 1760 yards to the statute mile against 5280 feet.

Why does the factor read 0.333333333333 rather than one third?

Because the calculation engine stores a decimal, and one third has no terminating decimal form. Twelve threes is where this sheet stops, which leaves a shortfall of about one part in a trillion — 30 feet computes as 9.99999999999 yards rather than a flat 10. Nothing you can measure with a tape or a laser is sensitive to that. If you need the answer with no truncation whatever, divide by 3 by hand instead.

Is the imperial yard the same as the US customary yard?

For everyday work, yes. Both the United Kingdom and the United States adopted the international yard of 0.9144 metre in 1959, so yards match on either side of the Atlantic. How do I enter a measurement written as feet and inches?

Divide the inches by 12 and add the result to the feet before you type. A wall of 14 ft 6 in becomes 14.5 ft, which the sheet returns as 4.833333 yards. Common fractions worth memorising: 3 in is 0.25 ft, 4 in is 0.333 ft, 6 in is 0.5 ft, 9 in is 0.75 ft. Entering 14.6 for 14 ft 6 in is the classic slip, and it puts you off by more than an inch.

Is a yard about the same as a metre?

Close, but short by more than you would guess: one yard is 0.9144 metre, so it falls 8.56 centimetres — about three and a half inches — behind. The gap compounds over distance. A hundred-yard football field measures 91.44 metres, so 100 metres is more than eight and a half metres longer than running goal line to goal line. Treating the two units as interchangeable is safe only for rough sizing, never for ordering material.
