Worked example — 16 fl oz of water versus a thicker syrup

Only for water, and only approximately — 16 US fluid ounces of water weighs about 1.043 lb, not a perfectly flat pound. The saying breaks down completely for anything meaningfully lighter or heavier than water: cooking oil comes in under a pound at that volume, while honey or syrup comes in well over.
