How this instrument works
Weight in the avoirdupois system, the pound-and-ounce system used in the US and historically across the British Empire, is a compound unit: nobody says a newborn weighs '8.5 pounds' in casual conversation, they say '8 pounds 8 ounces'. There are 16 ounces in a pound, so converting a decimal-pound reading into the spoken form means keeping the whole number of pounds and turning only the leftover fraction into ounces by multiplying by 16, not by 10 or 100 as a decimal habit might suggest.
This exact conversion happens constantly around birth weight. Many hospital baby scales, especially digital ones, display weight as a decimal number of pounds — 8.5, 7.25, 6.9 — because that is simplest for the scale's own electronics, yet every birth announcement, medical chart annotation and family retelling states the weight as pounds and ounces, '8 lb 8 oz', not as a decimal. The scale's raw number and the number a nurse writes on the chart are the same weight expressed two different ways.
The pound itself has had one internationally agreed value since 1 July 1959: exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, fixed by the same agreement among the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa that standardized the foot and inch. Worked example — a newborn's 8.5 lb digital scale reading
A hospital's digital baby scale displays a newborn's weight as 8.5 lb. Entering 8.5 into Weight (lb, decimal) gives the Pounds field the whole-number part, floor(8.5) = 8. The Ounces field then takes the remaining 0.5 of a pound and multiplies it by 16: 0.5 × 16 = 8.00 ounces exactly.
Read together, the baby weighs 8 lb 8.00 oz — the figure a nurse writes on the chart and the one announced to family, even though the scale itself only ever displayed the single decimal number 8.5. Because 0.5 is an exact half, this particular example divides evenly; a reading like 8.53 lb would instead give 8 lb 8.48 oz, since 0.53 × 16 = 8.48.

Why does 8.5 pounds become 8 lb 8 oz and not 8 lb 5 oz?
Because the 0.5 is a fraction of a pound, not a fraction phrased in tenths of an ounce — and a pound holds 16 ounces, not 10. Multiplying the leftover 0.5 by 16 gives 8 ounces, which is genuinely half of a 16-ounce pound. Reading the decimal digits directly as ounces is the single most common mistake in this conversion, since decimal habits suggest tenths where the unit actually uses sixteenths.
Is the pound-to-kilogram relationship exact?
Yes. Since 1 July 1959, the international avoirdupois pound has been defined as exactly 0.45359237 kg, agreed by standards bodies in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa in the same accord that fixed the foot and inch. Why is birth weight given in pounds and ounces at all?
Convention rather than necessity: in countries that use pounds and ounces for everyday weight, birth weight is one of the few measurements still spoken that way even in hospitals that otherwise chart in kilograms and grams for medication dosing. A digital scale's raw decimal-pound output gets translated into the pounds-and-ounces phrase purely because that's the familiar, memorable form for a family announcement.
What if the Ounces field rounds up to 16.00?
That's a display-rounding artefact, not an error — a true value such as 15.997 ounces rounds to 16.00 at two decimal places even though the Pounds field was already correctly floored from the full-precision decimal weight beforehand. If you see 16.00 in the Ounces field, the underlying weight sat fractionally under an extra whole pound, not over it.
How do I convert pounds and ounces back into a decimal pound figure?
Divide the ounces by 16 and add the whole pounds: for 8 lb 8.00 oz, that's 8 + 8.00 ÷ 16 = 8 + 0.5 = 8.5 lb, matching the original scale reading exactly. This reverse direction needs no rounding at all when the ounces figure itself is exact, since 16 divides evenly into many common fractions.
Does this differ from a kitchen or postal scale reading?
The arithmetic is identical — any decimal-pound weight, whether from a kitchen scale, a postal scale, or a hospital baby scale, splits into pounds and ounces the same way, since all of them use the same 16-ounce pound.
