How this instrument works
The gram is a thousandth of the kilogram, and since 20 May 2019 the kilogram itself has been pinned to a constant of nature: the Planck constant, fixed at 6.62607015 × 10⁻³⁴ joule seconds. Nothing about the size of a gram changed that morning, but its definition stopped depending on a platinum-iridium cylinder kept outside Paris that could pick up fingerprints. A quirk of the naming survives from the metric system's first years — SI prefixes attach to gram, never to kilogram, which is why small quantities are milligrams and micrograms.
On the other side sits the avoirdupois pound, the merchant's pound of sixteen ounces, and it is assembled from something smaller still: 7000 grains, each grain fixed at exactly 64.79891 milligrams. Multiply those out and you land on 453.59237 grams, which is precisely what the international yard and pound agreement of 1959 legislated when it wrote the pound down as 0.45359237 kilograms. Going from one to the other is therefore division by 453.59237, done here as a multiplication by its reciprocal, 0.00220462262185.
The two units meet wherever a metric bench sits inside an imperial supply chain. Worked example — 500 g, the continental market pound
A recipe printed in Bavaria calls for ein Pfund of flour. That word settled onto a round 500 g across much of Europe when metric measure arrived, and the French livre and Dutch pond did the same, so type 500 into the Grams (g) field and read what comes back. How does the grain fit between these two units?
The grain is the common ancestor of the pair: 7000 make one avoirdupois pound, and each is exactly 64.79891 mg, which puts 15.4323583529 grains in a gram. Two trades still live in that unit. Handloaders weigh bullets and powder charges by the grain — a 55-grain bullet is 3.564 g — and the familiar 325 mg aspirin tablet is a five-grain apothecary dose in disguise, nudged up from 323.99 mg when labelling went metric.
Do grams and pounds measure the same quantity?
Both measure mass, so this conversion holds anywhere in the universe. Confusion creeps in from engineering, where pound-force names the weight that gravity draws from one pound-mass and shares the same abbreviation.
