How this instrument works

Goals-against average (GAA) measures how many goals a goaltender allows per full game, rather than just counting total goals allowed — which matters because raw goal totals aren't fairly comparable between a goalie who played every minute of every game and one who came off the bench for a handful of periods. GAA normalizes goals allowed to a standard game length (60 minutes for hockey, 90 for soccer), so a goaltender's rate of goals allowed can be compared fairly regardless of how much total time they've actually played.

The formula multiplies goals allowed by the ratio of a full game's duration to the goaltender's actual minutes played: GAA = goals allowed × (game duration ÷ minutes played). If a goalie allows exactly 3 goals in exactly 60 minutes of hockey, GAA is simply 3.00; if they allow those same 3 goals in only 45 minutes (pulled early, or brought in partway through a game), the rate gets scaled up to reflect what that same pace would project to across a full 60 minutes.

GAA is one of the oldest and most widely tracked goaltending statistics in hockey and soccer, valued for its simplicity and intuitive scale, but it has real limitations: it doesn't account for shot volume (a goalie facing 40 shots a game has a much harder job than one facing 15), team defensive quality, or strength of opposing offenses. Save percentage, which does factor in shots faced, is commonly used alongside GAA for a fuller picture of goaltending performance.

Worked example — 3 goals allowed in a full 60-minute hockey game

Enter 3 for goals allowed, 60 for game duration, and 60 for minutes played (a full game with no relief). GAA = 3 x (60/60) = 3.00 — since the goaltender played the entire regulation game, the raw goal count and the normalized GAA are the same number.

Now consider a goaltender pulled early after allowing 5 goals in only 45 of the game's 60 minutes: GAA = 5 x (60/45) = 6.67. The extrapolation reflects that allowing 5 goals in three-quarters of a game is a noticeably worse per-minute rate than allowing 5 goals across a full 60 minutes would have been — GAA scales the partial-game performance up to what it would project to over a complete game, making it comparable to full-game outings.

Why does GAA use game duration instead of just goals per minute?

Goals-per-minute would produce very small decimal numbers that are hard to read at a glance (a typical goaltender allows well under 0.1 goals per minute), so GAA scales that rate up to goals per full game instead — a number that lines up intuitively with how fans already think about scoring ('a 2.50 GAA goalie allows about two and a half goals a game'). It's mathematically the same rate information, just presented on a more readable scale.

What's considered a good GAA in hockey?

In competitive adult and professional hockey, a GAA below about 2.50 is generally considered strong, 2.50-3.00 is solid, and above 3.50 typically signals below-average goaltending performance for that level — though exact benchmarks shift with the level of play and era (scoring rates vary meaningfully between youth, amateur, and professional hockey). Soccer GAA benchmarks run lower in absolute terms since fewer goals are scored per game overall in that sport.

Why doesn't GAA account for how many shots the goaltender faced?

GAA was designed as a simple, easy-to-track counting-based rate stat from an era before shot data was consistently tracked, and it deliberately measures only goals allowed relative to time played — not shot volume or shot difficulty. That's its main limitation: a goaltender facing 40 shots a game and allowing 3 goals is generally performing better than one facing 15 shots and also allowing 3, but GAA alone can't distinguish between them. Save percentage (saves divided by shots faced) is the standard complementary stat that does account for shot volume.

Can GAA be used for sports other than hockey and soccer?

The underlying goals-allowed-per-standard-game-length concept applies to any goal-scoring sport with a goaltender or similar last-line defender — lacrosse and water polo both track comparable rate stats using their own sport's regulation game length in place of hockey's 60 minutes or soccer's 90. Does GAA include overtime or shootout goals?
