How this instrument works
WHIP stands for walks plus hits per inning pitched, and it does exactly what the name says: add total walks allowed to total hits allowed, then divide by innings pitched. The result is a rate — baserunners allowed per inning — that's lower for pitchers who keep opponents off base and higher for pitchers who let a lot of traffic on the bases, regardless of whether those runners eventually score.
WHIP deliberately ignores how many of those baserunners actually cross the plate, which is what separates it from ERA (earned run average). A pitcher can allow a lot of walks and hits but strand most of them on base with strong pitching in high-leverage spots, producing a mediocre WHIP alongside a strong ERA — or the reverse, a low WHIP paired with a rough ERA if the few baserunners allowed happen to score via a couple of untimely extra-base hits. What counts as a good WHIP in baseball?
League-average WHIP for MLB pitchers typically sits around 1.30. A WHIP under 1.20 is considered very good, and elite starters and relievers can post WHIPs in the 0.90-to-1.10 range over a full season. Because WHIP only counts walks and hits, a pitcher who allows a lot of contact but induces weak groundouts can still post a strong WHIP even without an especially high strikeout rate.
Why doesn't WHIP count hit batters or errors that put runners on base?
WHIP is defined narrowly around the two most common ways a pitcher directly puts a batter on base — walks and hits allowed. Hit-by-pitch, and runners reaching on a fielding error, aren't included in the traditional formula, even though those runners are just as much on base as a walk or a hit would produce.
