How this instrument works
On-base percentage (OBP) measures how often a batter reaches base by any means that counts toward the stat: a hit, a walk, or being hit by a pitch. It divides those three ways of reaching base by the total plate appearances that could have produced them — at bats, walks, hit-by-pitches, and sacrifice flies. Unlike batting average, which only counts hits over at bats, OBP credits a batter for drawing a walk or taking a pitch off the elbow just as much as for a base hit.
The denominator deliberately excludes sacrifice bunts, because a sacrifice bunt is scored as a deliberate out-making play rather than a plate appearance where reaching base was the batter's intent. Sacrifice flies, by contrast, are included in the denominator even though they're also outs, because a batter with a runner on third and a fly ball to the outfield was still trying to produce a run, not specifically to make an out — the rule treats that plate appearance as a real batting opportunity rather than removing it from consideration.
OBP became central to modern baseball analysis because reaching base, not just getting a hit, is what keeps an inning alive and creates scoring chances. A hitter who walks often but doesn't hit for a high average can still post a strong OBP, and teams building lineups around run production weight OBP heavily precisely because outs — not hits — are the real scarce resource in an inning; a team gets 27 of them per game regardless of how those outs happen.

Worked example — 150 hits, 60 walks, 5 HBP
A batter finishes a season with 150 hits, 60 walks, 5 hit-by-pitches, 550 at bats and 5 sacrifice flies. The numerator is 150 + 60 + 5 = 215 times reaching base by those three routes. The denominator is 550 + 60 + 5 + 5 = 620 qualifying plate appearances. OBP is 215 / 620 = 0.346774, a solidly above-average on-base season.
For comparison, that batter's simple hits-over-at-bats batting average would be 150/550 = 0.273 — noticeably lower than the 0.347 OBP, because the walks and HBP that batting average ignores are adding 65 extra times on base into the OBP calculation.
Questions
How is OBP different from batting average?
Batting average only counts hits divided by at bats, so it ignores walks and hit-by-pitches entirely. OBP counts all three ways of reaching base — hits, walks, and HBP — against a wider denominator that also includes those same walks, HBP, and sacrifice flies. A batter who draws a lot of walks can have a much higher OBP than batting average would suggest, since every walk helps the numerator without ever showing up in the batting-average calculation at all.
Why do sacrifice flies count in OBP's denominator but sacrifice bunts don't?
A sacrifice fly still represents a real batting opportunity where the hitter put the ball in play trying to produce a run, even though it results in an out — so it counts as a qualifying plate appearance. A sacrifice bunt is scored as a deliberate tactical out rather than an attempt to reach base or drive in a run through hitting, so it's excluded from OBP's denominator entirely, on both sides of the calculation.
What counts as a good on-base percentage?
In modern MLB, a league-average OBP typically sits close to .310-.320, a good regular is usually around .340-.360, and anything above .400 for a full season is an elite, All-Star-caliber on-base year. Because OBP folds in walks and HBP alongside hits, it tends to run noticeably higher than batting average for the same player — a .270 hitter with a good batting eye can still post an OBP well into the .350s.
Does OBP count reaching base on an error or a fielder's choice?
No. OBP only credits hits, walks, and hit-by-pitches. Reaching base on a fielding error, a fielder's choice, or catcher's interference doesn't count toward the numerator, even though the batter is standing on base afterward — those plate appearances are scored as at bats without a hit, which actually lowers OBP slightly compared to if they were excluded entirely.
How does OBP relate to OPS?
On-base plus slugging (OPS) is simply OBP added to slugging percentage (SLG), combining a rate of reaching base with a rate of total bases per at bat into one number.
