How this instrument works
Paint, sealant, stain, and many liquid coatings are sold by the gallon but used across an area, and the relationship between the two — how far a gallon actually stretches — is what a coverage rate describes. Manufacturers print a claimed coverage rate on their product labels, but the number that actually matters is how much you used across how much area on your own job, which this calculator turns into a clean rate either way.
This instrument works from two raw numbers: total gallons used (or available) and the area they covered (or need to cover). Dividing gallons by area gives gallons per square foot, a small decimal; dividing area by gallons gives square feet per gallon, the more commonly quoted, larger and more intuitive figure most product labels actually use.

Worked example — 5 gallons over 500 square feet
5 gallons of a coating were used to cover 500 sq ft. Enter 5 into Total gallons and 500 into Area covered (sq ft). Gallons per square foot comes to 5 ÷ 500 = 0.01 exactly.
Square feet per gallon, the more familiar way to express the same rate, comes to 500 ÷ 5 = 100 sq ft per gallon — useful for directly comparing against a product's own label claim, or for budgeting how many gallons a larger area of the same job will need.

Why does this calculator give two different rates?
Because gallons per square foot and square feet per gallon are just two ways of expressing the same underlying relationship, inverses of each other, and different situations call for different forms — gallons per square foot is easier to multiply directly against a larger area to estimate total gallons needed, while square feet per gallon is the format most product labels and coverage claims actually use, making it easier to compare against.
Can I use this to check if a paint or stain lived up to its coverage claim?
Yes — enter the actual gallons you used and the actual area you covered on your job, and compare the resulting square-feet-per-gallon figure against the number printed on the product's label. A real-world rate noticeably lower than the label's claim usually reflects a porous or absorbent surface, multiple coats, or more texture than the label's test surface assumed, all of which reduce how far a gallon actually stretches.
Does this account for multiple coats?
Not directly — this calculator computes a raw rate from whatever gallons and area you enter, so if you used 3 gallons total across two coats over a 300 sq ft area, the resulting rate blends both coats together rather than isolating one coat's coverage. To find a single coat's rate, enter only the gallons used for that one coat against the same area.
What's a typical coverage rate for paint or stain?
It varies significantly by product type and surface — interior wall paint commonly covers somewhere around 350-400 sq ft per gallon on a smooth, primed surface, while porous or textured surfaces, primers, and specialty coatings often cover meaningfully less.
