How this instrument works

Gematria is the practice of assigning a numeric value to each letter of an alphabet and adding up the letters in a word or phrase to get a total — a technique with roots in ancient Hebrew and Greek numerology, where scholars compared words that summed to the same number and treated the match as meaningful. This calculator does not compute traditional Hebrew gematria, which assigns values to the 22 Hebrew letters (א=1, ב=2, and so on up to ת=400). Instead it applies the letter-summing idea to the 26 letters of the English alphabet, which is the calculation most people searching for an online "gematria calculator" actually want.

Three separate English-letter systems run at once on the same input text. Simple gematria is the most direct: a=1, b=2, c=3, on up through z=26, so the total is just the sum of each letter's position in the alphabet. English gematria multiplies every Simple value by 6 (a=6, b=12 ... z=156), a scaling convention used in some numerology writing. "Jewish" gematria is the odd one out — despite the name it is still an English-letter system, but it borrows the irregular structure of real Hebrew and Greek numeral tables: letters a through i run 1 through 9, then j jumps to 600, k resets to 10, and the rest of the alphabet climbs by tens (l=20 ... t=100) before four more letters take large jumps (u=200, v=700, w=900, x=300, y=400, z=500).

Only letters count. Spaces, digits, and punctuation are skipped entirely rather than being assigned a value of zero and summed in — so "OMNI 2026!" scores exactly the same as "OMNI" would on its own. The calculator is also case-insensitive: uppercase and lowercase versions of the same letter always contribute the same value, matching how these systems are used in practice, since nobody intends "HELLO" and "hello" to score differently.

Scoring "solvetutor" across all three systems

Typing "solvetutor" gives ten letters at alphabet positions s=19, o=15, l=12, v=22, e=5, t=20, u=21, t=20, o=15, r=18. Adding those positions gives a Simple gematria score of 167, and English gematria — Simple × 6 — comes out to 1002.

Jewish gematria tells a different story because it doesn't scale Simple by a fixed multiplier. Looking each letter up in the irregular table gives s=90, o=50, l=20, v=700, e=5, t=100, u=200, t=100, o=50, r=80, which sums to 1395 — nowhere near six times 167, because letters like v and u sit on a completely different part of the table than they do in Simple gematria.

The tool also shows how non-letters are handled: typing "OMNI 2026!" scores identically to typing just "OMNI" — the digits, space, and exclamation point are skipped rather than counted as zero-value letters, giving Simple=51, English=306, and Jewish=129, the same three numbers you'd get from "OMNI" alone.

Is this Hebrew gematria?

No. Traditional Hebrew gematria assigns values to the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet. This calculator instead runs three different English-letter numerology systems — Simple, English, and "Jewish" — over the 26 letters of the English alphabet. The "Jewish" system borrows the irregular shape of the Hebrew numeral table (small jumps, then big jumps for later letters) but applies it to English letters, so it is not the same calculation as scoring actual Hebrew text.

What's the difference between Jewish, English, and Simple gematria?

Simple gematria is a letter's plain position in the alphabet (a=1 through z=26). English gematria multiplies every Simple value by 6 (a=6 through z=156), so it's always exactly six times the Simple score. Jewish gematria uses a separate, irregular table modeled on real Hebrew and Greek numeral patterns — most letters follow small increments, but a handful (j, u, v, w, x, y, z) jump to values in the hundreds — so it does not scale predictably from the other two.

Why does "Jewish" gematria give a=1 but j=600?

Because the table isn't sequential like Simple gematria — it mirrors how ancient numeral systems assigned units, tens, and then larger jumps to later letters, rather than counting up one at a time. Letters a through i take values 1 through 9, k through t take multiples of ten, and the remaining six letters (u, v, w, x, y, z) take much larger, non-adjacent values. It's an irregular table by design, not an error in the calculation.

Do spaces, numbers, and punctuation affect the score?

No. Only the 26 letters of the alphabet contribute to any of the three scores. Spaces, digits, and punctuation marks are skipped entirely as the text is scanned, so a phrase like "OMNI 2026!" scores exactly the same as "OMNI" on its own.

Does uppercase versus lowercase change the result?

No. The calculator is case-insensitive, so "SOLVETUTOR", "solvetutor", and "SolveTutor" all produce identical Jewish, English, and Simple scores. Each letter is matched to its value regardless of how it was capitalized.

Is my text sent anywhere when I use this tool?

No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser — nothing you type is sent to a server, logged, or stored anywhere outside your own device, aside from the optional worksheet log, which saves to your browser's local storage only if you choose to keep it.
