How this instrument works
Isopsephy is the Greek-language counterpart to Hebrew gematria: give every letter of the alphabet a fixed numeric value, then add up the letters in a word to get a total. The practice goes back to at least the 8th century BC, when Greek numerals used letters instead of separate number symbols — the same alphabet did double duty as both the writing system and the counting system, so summing a word's letters into a number was a natural extension of arithmetic Greeks already did daily.
This is a distinct system from the "Gematria" calculator elsewhere on this site, which scores English-language text under three different numerology conventions. Greek isopsephy uses its own 24-letter alphabet and its own numeric table: alpha=1, beta=2, gamma=3, continuing through the tens (iota=10, kappa=20...) and the hundreds (rho=100, sigma=200... omega=800). Three additional letters that Greek numerals used in antiquity — digamma (6), koppa (90), and sampi (900) — dropped out of everyday written Greek centuries ago and are not part of the modern alphabet, so they're out of scope here; a phrase typed on today's Greek keyboard will never need them.
Greek text is frequently written with accent and breathing marks (like the tonos on ό), so before scoring, this tool normalizes the input and strips those diacritics — meaning accented ό scores exactly the same as bare ο. Input is also case-folded, so ΑΒΓ and αβγ produce an identical total. Any character that isn't one of the 24 modern Greek letters, including Latin letters, digits, and punctuation, is simply ignored rather than raising an error or being counted as zero — a phrase with no Greek letters at all scores 0.

Working out the isopsephy of λόγος ("logos")
λόγος is Greek for "word" or "reason" — the root of English words like "logic" and the "-logy" suffix. Before scoring, the accented ό (omicron with a tonos) normalizes to plain ο, which is worth 70. The word then breaks down as λ=30, ο=70, γ=3, ο=70, and the word-final ς=200 (the special shape sigma takes at the end of a word, worth the same 200 as regular σ).
Adding those five values — 30 + 70 + 3 + 70 + 200 — gives an isopsephy total of 373. Typing the unaccented form "λογος" produces the identical result, since accent-stripping happens before the letters are looked up, and typing plain Latin text like "hello" instead returns 0, because none of its letters exist in the Greek table.

Is this the same as the English gematria calculator?
No — they're separate systems for separate alphabets, and this site hosts both. Greek isopsephy assigns values to the 24 letters of the modern Greek alphabet (alpha=1 through omega=800); the site's Gematria calculator instead scores English text under three different numerology conventions loosely inspired by Hebrew and Greek number tables. The two tools produce unrelated numbers even for words that sound alike.
Why does λόγος score 373?
Each of its five letters is looked up individually and summed: λ=30, ο=70 (the accented ό normalizes to plain ο first), γ=3, ο=70 again, and the word-final ς=200. Adding 30 + 70 + 3 + 70 + 200 gives 373.
Does an accent mark like the one on ό change a letter's value?
No. The tool strips accents and breathing marks before looking up each letter's value, so ό and bare ο always score the same 70 points. This matches how isopsephy is done in practice — an accent is a pronunciation guide, not a different letter, so it shouldn't change a word's numeric value.
What happens if I type non-Greek text?
Every character that isn't one of the 24 modern Greek letters — Latin letters, digits, punctuation, spaces — is ignored rather than counted or flagged as an error. Typing pure English text like "hello" returns a score of exactly 0.
Why aren't digamma, koppa, and sampi included?
Those three letters were used only as numeral symbols in antiquity and dropped out of the everyday written Greek alphabet long ago; the modern 24-letter alphabet you'd type on a Greek keyboard today doesn't include them, so this calculator's letter-value table doesn't either. A specialized numismatic or classical-text tool would be needed to cover those archaic numeral forms.
Is uppercase Greek text handled the same as lowercase?
Yes. Input is case-folded before scoring, so ΑΒΓ and αβγ both sum to 1+2+3=6. You can type Greek text in whatever case is convenient without it affecting the result.
