How this instrument works
The heptathlon combines seven very different events — three running, two jumping, two throwing — into a single competition, which raises an obvious problem: how do you compare a fast 200m time against a long javelin throw on the same numeric scale? World Athletics (formerly the IAAF) solves this with published scoring tables that convert every individual performance into points using event-specific formulas, so a genuinely excellent shot put and a genuinely excellent 800m time end up worth a comparable number of points.
Running events use the formula points = A × (B − T)^C, where T is the time in seconds — since a faster time is better, points rise as T falls below B. Jumping and throwing events flip the direction: points = A × (M − B)^C for jumps and points = A × (D − B)^C for throws, where M or D is the measured distance or height — points rise as the measured result climbs above B. Each event has its own published A, B, and C constants, calibrated so that a world-class performance in any single event lands in roughly the same 1000-1100 point range, keeping the seven events on a genuinely comparable scale.
This calculator applies the official constant set for each of the seven women's heptathlon events, floors each event's result to a whole number (matching IAAF convention — points are never rounded up), and sums all seven for the total score. It's the exact same points system used to score real heptathlon competitions, from school meets up through the Olympics, just without the actual competition.

Worked example — elite-level performances across all 7 events
Enter a 13.5-second 100m hurdles, a 180cm high jump, a 14m shot put, a 23.5-second 200m, a 630cm long jump, a 45m javelin throw, and a 128-second 800m — a set of genuinely elite performances. Running the hurdles time through its formula, 9.23076 × (26.7 − 13.5)^1.835, gives 1050 points; the high jump's 1.84523 × (180 − 75)^1.348 gives 978 points; the shot put's 56.0211 × (14 − 1.5)^1.05 gives 794 points.
The remaining four events score similarly: the 200m gives 1029 points, the long jump gives 943 points, the javelin gives 763 points, and the 800m gives 994 points. Summed across all seven, this performance totals 6551 points — a genuinely elite-level heptathlon score, in the range associated with major international finals. By contrast, a solid club-level performance set (17.0s hurdles, 150cm high jump, 9m shot put, 28.0s 200m, 480cm long jump, 25m javelin, 155s 800m) totals a more modest 3832 points, showing how steeply the formulas reward the jump from good to elite in each event.
Questions
Why do running events use (B − time) while jumps and throws use (mark − B)?
It's about which direction of change counts as improvement. In running events, a smaller time is better, so the formula subtracts your time from a fixed constant B — as your time drops, (B − time) grows, and so do your points. In jumps and throws, a bigger mark is better, so the formula subtracts B from your result instead — as your distance or height grows past B, (mark − B) grows, and so do your points. Both directions ultimately reward the same thing: getting better at the event.
Where do the A, B, and C constants come from?
They're published in World Athletics' official combined-events scoring tables, recalibrated periodically by the sport's governing body so that elite performances across all seven events land in a comparable points range (roughly 1000-1100 for a world-class single-event result). They're not arbitrary — they're chosen specifically to make the heptathlon's seven very different events (sprinting, jumping, throwing) scoreable on one consistent, fair scale, and they're the same constants used to score official competitions.
Why are points floored instead of rounded to the nearest whole number?
Flooring (always rounding down, even for a result like 978.9) is the official IAAF/World Athletics convention for combined-events scoring, applied consistently across every event and every competition. It means a performance just shy of the next whole point never gets rounded up in an athlete's favor — a small but deliberate design choice that keeps the scoring system unambiguous and identical for every competitor.
Can I use this calculator for a decathlon instead of a heptathlon?
No — decathlon (the men's ten-event competition) uses a different set of events and a separate set of A, B, C constants for each of its events, even where an event name overlaps (like the 100m or long jump). This calculator is built specifically around the official women's heptathlon event list and constants, so decathlon results would need decathlon-specific scoring constants to compute correctly.
What's a good heptathlon score to aim for?
Context matters a lot here: top international competitors at major championships often score in the 6400-7000+ point range, national-level competitive athletes commonly fall in the 5000-6000 range, and solid club or collegiate-level performances often land in the 3500-4500 range. Scores below that reflect earlier-stage development in one or more events. Since the formulas reward the jump from good to elite performance steeply in every event, relatively small improvements in each of the seven events can add up to a meaningfully higher total score.
