How this instrument works
Hours and days sit outside SI proper, yet both are formally accepted for use alongside it and appear in Table 8 of BIPM's brochure. Each is pinned to a whole number of seconds, and a second has been defined since 1967 by caesium-133: 9,192,631,770 cycles of its ground-state hyperfine transition. An hour is fixed at 3,600 of those seconds, a civil day at 86,400. Divide one count into another and 24 comes out with nothing left over, which makes this conversion arithmetic rather than measurement.
Twenty-four is an inheritance from Egypt. Priests tracked thirty-six decan stars whose successive risings cut darkness into twelve parts; daylight was given twelve to match, and twilight absorbed whatever remained. Those hours were seasonal — a summer daylight hour ran considerably longer than a winter one — and stayed unequal for millennia. Only once weight-driven escapement clocks spread through fourteenth-century Europe did equal hours become normal, because no gear train can be told to run slower in December. Minutes and seconds arrived separately, as sexagesimal subdivisions borrowed from Babylonian arithmetic by way of Hellenistic astronomy.
Earth keeps poorer time than either unit suggests. One mean solar rotation runs a millisecond or two off 86,400 s and wanders with tides, core coupling and seasonal winds, so from 1972 leap seconds were spliced into UTC to hold civil clocks near astronomical noon; any UTC day carrying one lasts 86,401 s. CGPM voted in 2022 to retire that practice by 2035. None of it disturbs your answer here: payroll runs, hospital length-of-stay figures, equipment hire, ISO 8601 durations such as PT48H, and spreadsheet date serials all assume a flat 86,400 s.

Worked example — a 48-hour salt-spray run
A corrosion lab wraps up an ASTM B117 salt-spray exposure and logs 48 run-hours on its chamber meter. Typing 48 into Hours (h) returns 2.000000 on Days (day): two whole calendar days with a closed door and an atomiser that never paused.
That result is a clock reading, though, not a labour figure. Bill those identical 48 hours as technician time at eight hours per shift and six working days fall due, not two. Divide by 24 for elapsed duration; divide by shift length for effort. Muddling one with another is how quotations go wrong.
Questions
Is one hour exactly one twenty-fourth of a day?
Yes. A civil day is defined as 86,400 seconds and an hour as 3,600, so their ratio comes to 24 with no remainder and no measurement uncertainty whatsoever. Both counts are conventions rather than observations, which is why every figure produced here is exact arithmetic — your entry and display rounding are its only sources of error.
Why is the factor written 0.0416666666667 rather than 1 ÷ 24?
One divided by 24 gives 0.041666… with a six repeating forever, so any engine has to cut it somewhere. Thirteen significant digits are stored here, landing about eight parts in 10¹³ above true value — convert an entire year's worth of hours and you accumulate roughly 25 microseconds of drift. Output shows six decimals, so 48 hours still reads 2.000000.
Does this count working days or calendar days?
Calendar days of 24 hours. Payroll systems, project plans and rota sheets usually mean something narrower by 'day' — a shift of 7.5, 8 or 12 hours — and no unit standard governs that choice. For working days, divide by your shift length instead: 48 hours is 2 calendar days, 6 eight-hour days, or 4 twelve-hour days. Confirm which sense a contract intends before invoicing anyone.
Is a day always exactly 86,400 seconds?
As a unit, yes. As a stretch of lived time, not quite. UTC days carrying a leap second run 86,401 seconds, and 27 such seconds have been inserted since 1972; local days at daylight-saving boundaries run 23 or 25 hours. CGPM resolved in 2022 to end leap-second insertion by 2035. For duration arithmetic, keep using 86,400 regardless.
How does a sidereal day differ from this one?
A sidereal day — one rotation measured against distant stars — lasts 23 h 56 min 4.09 s, some 3 minutes 56 seconds shy of a solar day, because Earth must turn slightly further each cycle to face our Sun again. Run 48 hours through that figure and about 2.0055 sidereal days come out. Telescope drives and satellite tracking need it; timesheets and courts do not.
How do I convert days back into hours?
Multiply by 24: 0.75 day is 18 hours, 3 days is 72. Spreadsheets handle this neatly, since Excel and Google Sheets both store dates as day serials where 1.0 means one day — =A1*24 turns a duration into hours and =A1/24 turns hours into a day fraction. Format your result cell as a plain number rather than a time, or a clock face appears instead of a count.
