How this instrument works

Property listings quote lot size in square feet because that number looks bigger and more concrete to a buyer scrolling a search results page — 8,000 sq ft reads as substantial, where the equivalent 0.18 acres can look deceptively small. County assessors, zoning ordinances and recorded deeds, on the other hand, almost always work in acres, since that has been the standard unit of land area in American surveying since colonial times.
