How this instrument works
This is deliberately plain arithmetic: a daily calorie target divided by however many meals are planned for the day gives an even budget per meal. Divide the top figure by the bottom one and the result is exactly what each meal is allotted if every meal carries the same weight — no meal larger or smaller than any other.
Working backward from a daily total to a per-meal figure is how a great many meal-planning and portion-control approaches actually operate. A dietitian, an app, or a structured eating plan sets the daily target first, based on goals, activity, and body size, and this division then tells someone roughly how much to put on each plate so the day adds up correctly by the final meal. It turns an abstract daily number into a concrete, repeatable serving size that is easy to picture sitting on a table.
The even split is a simplification, and a fair number of people, along with some structured eating approaches, deliberately do not eat that way. A larger breakfast and a smaller dinner, or the reverse, are common patterns, and a 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis in JAMA Network Open examined trials that shifted calories earlier in the day and found a modestly lower body weight compared with standard, more evenly spread eating, though the authors noted the effect sizes were small and the underlying evidence mixed. Worked example — 2000 kcal across 4 meals
A 2000 kcal daily target split across 4 meals: 2000 ÷ 4 = 500 kcal per meal — four equally sized meals that together sum back to the original 2000 kcal target.
Change either number and the per-meal figure moves with it. An 1800 kcal target split across 3 meals gives 1800 ÷ 3 = 600 kcal per meal — fewer, larger meals drawn from a smaller daily total. A 2400 kcal target split across 6 smaller meals gives 2400 ÷ 6 = 400 kcal per meal — the same underlying division, just carried out across more, smaller sittings.
Questions
Why is this just division and nothing more complex?
Because splitting a fixed total evenly across a fixed number of parts is exactly what division does, and layering anything more onto that step would just invent precision the inputs cannot support. The daily target already reflects whatever calculation or judgment set it; this tool only handles the second step, turning that one number into a workable per-meal figure.
Does eating equal-sized meals actually matter for weight or health?
The evidence is mixed and the effect looks modest either way. A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis in JAMA Network Open pooled trials that shifted more calories toward earlier meals and found a small weight advantage over standard, more even eating, but the authors described the effect sizes as small and the underlying studies as inconsistent in quality. How should snacks factor into the meals-per-day count?
That choice belongs to whoever is planning, and it changes the answer meaningfully. Counting two snacks as their own entries alongside three main meals means entering 5 for meals per day, spreading the same daily target across more, smaller portions; folding snacks into the nearest main meal instead means entering 3, which produces larger per-meal figures. Either approach works as long as the count matches how the day is actually going to be eaten.
Why might my planned meals not add up exactly to my daily target?
Rounding is the usual culprit — a per-meal figure like 333.3 kcal, from a target that does not divide evenly by the meal count, gets rounded for a real plate of food, and those small roundings compound across a full day. Treat the per-meal number as a close target rather than an exact one, and let the last meal of the day absorb whatever small difference has built up by then.
