How this instrument works
A recipe written for a 1000-watt microwave gives the wrong cook time on a weaker 700-watt one, because microwave cooking delivers a fixed amount of energy to the food, and that energy is power multiplied by time. If a lower-wattage oven delivers less power each second, it needs proportionally more seconds to deliver the same total energy — cooking time scales inversely with wattage, not on a fixed offset like 'always add a minute.'
This calculator applies that inverse relationship directly: it multiplies the recipe's original time by the ratio of the recipe's wattage to your own microwave's wattage. A weaker microwave than the recipe assumed gets a longer adjusted time; a stronger one gets a shorter time; identical wattage leaves the time unchanged.
Treat the adjusted time as a strong starting estimate, not a guarantee down to the second. Real microwaves vary in cavity size, turntable behavior, and how evenly they distribute microwave energy, even at the same rated wattage, so two 700-watt microwaves from different manufacturers won't necessarily cook identically. Worked example — a recipe written for a stronger microwave
A recipe calls for 60 seconds in a 1000-watt microwave, but the kitchen's actual microwave is rated at only 700 watts. Entering 1000 for Recipe's microwave wattage, 60 for Recipe's cook time, and 700 for Your microwave's wattage gives Adjusted cook time (sec) = 60 x (1000 / 700) = 60 x 1.4286 = 85.7 seconds.
That extra 25-plus seconds isn't arbitrary — it's the additional time a weaker 700-watt oven needs to deliver the same total energy the recipe's 1000-watt assumption would have delivered in 60 seconds. Running the same recipe in a more powerful 1200-watt microwave instead would scale the other direction, shortening the cook time below the recipe's original 60 seconds.
