How this instrument works

Pea gravel is small, naturally rounded stone — typically 3/8 to 3/4 inch across — prized for pathways, playgrounds, and decorative ground cover because it's comfortable underfoot and doesn't compact as hard as angular crushed stone. This calculator converts a project's length, width, and depth into cubic yards, then into tons using a density figure, the same two-step conversion any bulk stone supplier uses to price and deliver material.

Pea gravel's small, rounded, fairly uniform pieces settle differently than a mixed-size crushed aggregate, so its typical density — commonly around 1.2 to 1.5 tons per cubic yard — is a separate figure from gravel, limestone, or landscape rock, even though the underlying math is identical. 1.3 tons/yd³ is used here as a reasonable planning default; ask your specific supplier for their pea gravel's actual density before ordering a large quantity, since real material can run lighter or heavier depending on source and moisture.

Worked example — a 12×8 ft pea-gravel path

Set Area length to 12 ft, Area width to 8 ft, Depth to 2in, and Material density to 1.3 tons/yd³, a typical pea-gravel planning figure. Volume = 12 × 8 × (2/12) = 16 cu ft ÷ 27 = 0.5926 cubic yards. Tons needed = 0.5926 × 1.3 = 0.7704 tons.

A larger 25×10 ft play-area base at a deeper 3in layer, using slightly denser gravel at 1.35 tons/yd³, needs 2.3148 cubic yards and 3.125 tons — more than four times the first example's tonnage, since area, depth, and density all increased together.

The formula itself — footprint × depth converted to cubic yards, then to tons via density — works for any bulk stone material, including river rock, decorative gravel, or similar small aggregate. Just swap in that material's own typical density (river rock commonly runs a bit heavier, closer to 1.3-1.5 tons/yd³) instead of the pea-gravel default, since density is what actually distinguishes one material from another in this calculation.
