How this instrument works
Asphalt is sold and delivered by weight (tons), not by area, so estimating a paving job means converting the area you want to cover into a volume, and that volume into a weight. The volume comes from simple geometry — length times width times the compacted thickness — and the weight comes from multiplying that volume by asphalt's density.
Hot-mix asphalt density is commonly cited around 145 lb per cubic foot as an industry-standard planning figure, though real mixes typically range from about 140 to 160 lb/ft³ depending on the aggregate blend, binder content, and how well the mix is compacted. This calculator uses 145 lb/ft³ as a default, but the field is fully editable — if your supplier or paving contractor quotes a specific mix density, use that number instead for a more accurate order.
Because thickness is entered in inches while area is in square feet, the calculator converts thickness to feet internally before multiplying, then divides the resulting weight by 2,000 to convert pounds to standard US tons.

A 20 x 10 ft driveway patch, 2 inches thick
A homeowner is patching a 20 ft by 10 ft section of driveway with 2 inches of compacted asphalt. Volume = 20 x 10 x (2/12) = 33.333 cubic feet. At the typical 145 lb/ft³ density: 33.333 x 145 = 4,833.33 lb, which divided by 2,000 gives 2.41667 tons — a small order most suppliers can fill from a single truck run.
A full 50 ft by 12 ft driveway resurfaced at 3 inches thick needs considerably more: volume = 50 x 12 x 0.25 = 150 cubic feet, weight = 150 x 145 = 21,750 lb, or 10.875 tons — four and a half times the patch job's tonnage, driven by three times the footprint (600 vs. 200 sq ft) combined with 1.5 times the thickness, two factors that compound multiplicatively rather than add.

Why does asphalt get ordered in tons instead of cubic yards or square feet?
Asphalt plants batch and load hot mix by weight, and delivery trucks are weighed at the plant and at the job site, so tons is the unit that matches how the material is actually produced, priced, and hauled — even though the paving crew ultimately spreads it by area and thickness.
