How this instrument works
The core math behind ordering pavers is simple division: total area divided by the area of one paver gives a raw count, but real installations always need more than that raw number, since pavers along every edge, curve, or border get cut to fit, and cut pieces are frequently unusable waste rather than reusable offcuts.
This calculator adds a waste percentage on top of the raw area before dividing, the standard approach used across paver-supply calculators. A straight running-bond or stack pattern in a simple rectangular layout typically only needs about 10% extra; a diagonal or herringbone pattern, or a layout with lots of curves, borders, or cutouts, generates meaningfully more waste and commonly needs 15-20% extra or more.
The result is always rounded up to a whole paver, since suppliers sell whole units, not fractions — so even when your area divides out almost evenly by paver size, expect the final count to round up rather than land on a suspiciously clean number.

Worked example — a 200 sq ft patio, 12×12in pavers
Set Paved area to 200 sq ft, Paver length and width to 12in each, a 1 sq ft paver, and Waste allowance to 10%. Paver area = (12 × 12) ÷ 144 = 1 sq ft. Pavers needed = ceil((200 × 1.10) ÷ 1) = 221 — the calculator's always-round-up rule bumps the count to 221 even here, where 200 × 1.10 works out to almost exactly 220, since it's built to never leave you a paver short.
A 350 sq ft driveway using smaller 6×9in pavers, paver area = 54 ÷ 144 = 0.375 sq ft, at the same 10% waste needs ceil((350 × 1.10) ÷ 0.375) = ceil(1,026.67) = 1,027 pavers — a much higher count than the first example, since each individual paver covers far less area, not because the waste percentage changed.
Questions
How much waste allowance should I add when ordering pavers?
10% is a common default for a simple straight running-bond or stack-bond pattern laid in a mostly rectangular area. Diagonal patterns like herringbone or basketweave create more angled cuts along every edge, so suppliers commonly recommend 15-20% extra for those layouts, and a design with lots of curves, borders, or cutouts around obstacles can push waste even higher. When in doubt, err toward more waste allowance rather than less — running short mid-project on a discontinued or dye-lot-specific product can be a real problem.
Why did my paver count round up to an oddly specific number?
Because the calculator always rounds the final count up to the next whole paver — you can't buy a fraction of one — so even a calculation that lands very close to a round number, like almost exactly 220, still rounds up to make sure you have at least enough material, landing on 221 in that case. This is standard practice across coverage-based material calculators; a slightly conservative round-up is safer than being one paver short at the edge of a pattern.
Does this calculator account for the base and joint sand under pavers?
No — it computes only the number of pavers themselves, based on paved area and paver footprint. Base gravel and bedding/joint sand are separate materials with their own volume-based calculations, typically figured from the same footprint area but a chosen compacted-base depth and a 1-inch bedding-sand layer per standard installation practice; budget those separately alongside the paver count from this tool.
What paver pattern uses the least material?
A simple straight or running-bond pattern, where pavers line up in straight rows or a brick-like offset, generally wastes the least material because most cuts happen only along the outer border of the area rather than throughout the interior. Diagonal layouts like herringbone or basketweave look more distinctive but require angled cuts across the whole field, not just the edges, which is why they typically carry a meaningfully higher recommended waste percentage.
Should I order all my pavers from the same production batch?
It's a good practice when possible, since paver color and texture can vary slightly between manufacturing batches, sometimes called dye lots, and mixing batches can create a visible patchiness across a large installation. Ordering your full calculated quantity, including the waste allowance, from one batch or lot number up front reduces the risk of needing to reorder later and getting a visibly different batch for the remainder of the job.
