How this instrument works

Bedding sand is the thin, screeded layer of sand pavers are set into, sitting directly on top of the compacted base and beneath the pavers themselves — distinct from joint sand, which gets swept into the gaps between pavers after they're laid. This calculator computes bedding sand volume from your paved area and depth, then converts that to tons using a density figure, the same volume-to-weight conversion used for any bulk aggregate.

Industry installation guides consistently point to a 1-inch depth as the standard for compacted bedding sand under interlocking pavers — deep enough to allow the pavers to be leveled and settled during compaction, but not so deep that the sand shifts unpredictably under load. Installers commonly use screed rails or pipes to strike this layer to a uniform depth before setting pavers, and it's typically left loose and uncompacted until after the pavers themselves are placed and vibrated down.

Sand density is where real variation enters the calculation: dry concrete or paver-bedding sand typically runs around 1.2-1.5 tons per cubic yard, with 1.35 used here as a reasonable mid-range default. A larger 500 sq ft patio at a slightly thicker 1.25in bed, using denser masonry sand at 1.4 tons/yd³, needs 500 × (1.25/12) ÷ 27 = 1.929 cubic yards and 1.929 × 1.4 = 2.701 tons — showing how even a modest depth increase compounds with a denser sand to noticeably raise the total tonnage.

The pavers themselves get set into that loose layer and then compacted with a plate compactor afterward, which settles both the pavers and the bedding together into a stable, interlocked surface. What kind of sand should I use for paver bedding?
