How this instrument works

Single-use plastic items are individually light enough to feel weightless in daily life — a bottle or a bag barely registers — which makes the cumulative annual total genuinely surprising for most people once it's added up. This calculator focuses on two of the most common everyday single-use plastic items: bottled-water-style PET bottles and lightweight HDPE grocery bags.

Per-item plastic weights are reported across a real range in the literature rather than one universally agreed figure, so this calculator uses disclosed, rounded, order-of-magnitude midpoints: a standard lightweight 500 mL PET bottle at about 13 grams (commonly cited range roughly 8-15 g) and a single-use HDPE grocery bag at about 6 grams (commonly cited range roughly 4-9 g) — both adjustable if you have a more specific figure for your own bottles or bags.

Multiplying your weekly counts by these per-item weights and scaling to 52 weeks gives an annual plastic-weight total in kilograms — a concrete number that's easier to hold in mind, and easier to track reductions against, than a vague sense of 'using too much plastic.'

Worked example — 5 bottles and 3 bags a week

At the default weights (13 g per bottle, 6 g per bag), someone using 5 plastic bottles and 3 plastic bags a week generates 5×13 + 3×6 = 65 + 18 = 83 grams of single-use plastic in a typical week.

Treat the output as a partial, illustrative total for these two common categories specifically, not a comprehensive personal plastic footprint.

Is switching from plastic to glass or metal bottles automatically better?

Not automatically on every environmental measure — glass and metal containers are typically heavier and more energy-intensive to manufacture and transport than plastic, so the full life-cycle comparison depends on how many times the alternative container gets reused before disposal. A reusable bottle used consistently for months or years generally outperforms disposable plastic bottles on most measures, but a single-use glass bottle can, in some life-cycle assessments, have a higher footprint than the plastic bottle it replaces.
