This calculator is built around that reality: it focuses on a single item type at a time and quantifies exactly what a specific reduction target is worth over a year.

It uses the same disclosed, order-of-magnitude per-item weight estimates as this project's Plastic Footprint calculator: a standard plastic bottle at about 13 grams, a plastic shopping bag at about 6 grams, and a plastic drinking straw at about 0.42 grams — all commonly-cited midpoints for their respective item categories, since real weights vary by manufacturer and design.

The math is a marginal calculation, not a total inventory: it takes the difference between your current weekly use and your goal weekly use, multiplies by the item's weight, and scales to a full year — so the output is specifically the plastic weight you'd avoid by hitting that goal, not your total plastic footprint from that item.

Worked example — cutting plastic bags from 6 to 2 a week

Someone using 6 plastic bags a week decides to cut back to 2 a week by bringing a reusable bag most trips — a reduction of 6 − 2 = 4 bags avoided every week.

At the default weight of about 6 grams per bag, that's 4 × 6 = 24 grams saved per week, which scales to 24 × 52 ÷ 1000 = 1.248 kilograms of single-use plastic saved over a full year, just from this one specific, sustainable habit change.

Why is the weight saved so small compared to the total plastic problem?

Because this calculator deliberately measures the marginal impact of one specific, individual behavior change on one item type, not the scale of global plastic production or pollution — an individual cutting a few bags or bottles a week saves a genuinely modest personal weight, even though that same change, multiplied across millions of people making similar changes, adds up to something much larger. It's meant to make one concrete habit change tangible, not to represent systemic plastic reduction on its own.

Can I use this for an item that isn't bottles, bags, or straws?

Not directly with this calculator's built-in item list, but the underlying math is simple enough to redo by hand for any item: multiply your weekly reduction count by that item's typical weight in grams, then by 52 and divide by 1000 to get an annual kilogram figure — the same formula this calculator applies to bottles, bags, and straws.

What if my goal is to eliminate an item completely?

Set the goal use per week to 0 — the calculator will treat your entire current weekly usage as the reduction, giving you the full annual weight saved by eliminating that item type entirely rather than just reducing it. Cutting plastic straws entirely from a 14-a-week (2-a-day) habit, for example, saves about 0.306 kg a year at the default straw weight.

Is the goal always achievable, or does the calculator check that for me?

The calculator assumes your goal is less than or equal to your current use, since it's built to measure a reduction — if you enter a goal higher than your current use, the tool flags it as invalid rather than reporting a negative 'savings' figure, since that would actually represent an increase in plastic use, not a reduction.

How does this differ from tracking total plastic footprint?
