How this instrument works
Price per square inch takes a total price and divides it by the area, in square inches, that price buys — collapsing two numbers that scale differently into one figure you can compare across sizes. The classic case is pizza: a pizza's area grows with the square of its diameter, so a 16-inch pizza carries 78% more area than a 12-inch pizza despite rarely costing 78% more, which means the price per square inch almost always drops as the pizza gets bigger.
The same division applies anywhere a price is fixed to an area measured in inches rather than feet — sheet glass, ceramic tile, fabric remnants, laser-cut panels, and specialty printing all get quoted or compared this way when the pieces in question are too small for square-foot pricing to feel natural. Square inches also resolve the classic 'one big pizza or two small ones' question: an 18-inch pizza (254.5 sq in) actually beats two 12-inch pizzas (226.2 sq in combined) on total area, a comparison a per-pizza price tag can't show.
The figure only prices area — it says nothing about toppings, crust style, material quality, or waste.
