How this instrument works
Price per unit takes a pack's total price and divides it by how many discrete items — units — are inside, converting an uneven mix of pack sizes into one comparable rate. Retail packaging almost never makes this easy on its own: a shelf full of batteries, water bottles, cleaning wipes, or snack bars sold in 4-packs, 8-packs, 12-packs, and 24-packs forces a shopper to do division in their head just to know which one is actually cheaper per item.
This is exactly the arithmetic behind 'bulk is always cheaper,' and it's also exactly the arithmetic that occasionally proves that assumption wrong. Retailers set larger-pack pricing based on their own supply costs and margins, not a fixed discount curve, so a 24-pack sometimes prices out worse per unit than two 12-packs bought together, especially during a sale on the smaller size. Dividing total price by unit count is the only way to know for certain rather than guess from the bigger box.
The rate only compares price against count, not quality, freshness, or how much of the pack you'll actually use before it expires or goes stale. A cheaper price per unit on a jumbo pack of anything perishable can still be the worse buy if a chunk of it gets thrown out unused — the calculator prices what's in the box, not what you'll end up consuming.

Worked example — a $12, 6-pack of beverages
Enter $12 into Total price, $ and 6 into Number of units — a standard 6-pack of a bottled beverage. Price per unit, $ divides 12 by 6 and returns $2.00 per unit exactly.
Compare that against a 12-pack priced at $45: 45 / 12 = $3.75 per unit, noticeably worse value per bottle than the 6-pack despite the larger count — a reminder that a bigger pack isn't automatically the cheaper one until the division actually gets run.

Is buying the bigger multi-pack always cheaper per unit?
No — it's common but not guaranteed. Larger packs are usually discounted per unit because packaging and shipping costs spread across more items, but promotions, clearance pricing, and different supplier margins can flip that relationship, occasionally making a smaller pack the better rate. Dividing total price by unit count for both options is the only reliable way to know which one actually wins.
What counts as a 'unit' in this calculation?
Whatever discrete, individually usable item the pack is sold in — a single battery, bottle, wipe, snack bar, or any other countable piece the packaging label lists a quantity for. Enter the price you'll actually pay after any coupon or discount is applied, not the sticker price, if you want price per unit to reflect what the deal actually costs — entering the pre-discount price will overstate the true per-unit cost of a discounted pack.
