How this instrument works
Price per weight takes a total price and divides it by a weight figure, in whichever unit you enter it, producing a rate you can compare against any other price quoted in that same unit. It deliberately leaves the weight unit open rather than fixing it to ounces or pounds, because a growing share of specialty goods — coffee, tea, spices, bulk grains, imported cheeses, craft ingredients — are weighed and priced in grams or kilograms even in countries that use imperial units everywhere else.
A shopper comparing two bags of specialty coffee, one priced per kilogram and one priced per some other weight figure, needs the same division either way; what changes is only which unit the result comes out in. Because the calculator doesn't assume a specific unit, it works identically whether you're pricing 3 kg of beans, 500 grams of saffron, or a bulk weight quoted in a unit neither ounces nor pounds captures cleanly — you supply the weight and unit, and the division does the rest.
The rate is only comparable against another price quoted in the exact same weight unit. A kilogram rate and a per-pound rate look like similar numbers but describe different amounts of product — 1 kilogram is about 2.2 pounds — so mixing the two without converting first produces a comparison that looks valid but isn't. Keep both prices in the same weight unit before trusting which rate is actually lower.

Worked example — $45 for 3 kg of specialty coffee
Enter $45 into Total price, $ and 3 into Weight — 3 kilograms of specialty coffee beans, a generic weight-based purchase not tied to a specific imperial unit. Price per unit weight, $ divides 45 by 3 and returns $15.00 per unit of weight (per kilogram, in this case).
Compare that against a 5 kg bag priced at $120: 120 / 5 = $24.00 per unit weight — a noticeably worse rate than the $15.00 bag despite its larger total size, showing that a bigger bulk purchase isn't automatically the better rate per unit of weight.

What weight unit should I use in this calculator?
Whatever unit the price label or your scale already gives you — grams, kilograms, or any other weight unit. The calculator performs no unit conversion, so the result comes out in dollars per whichever unit you entered; just be consistent, and make sure any price you're comparing it against uses that same unit before trusting the comparison.
Why isn't this calculator specific to ounces or pounds?
Because a growing amount of specialty and bulk food — coffee, tea, spices, imported goods — is weighed and priced in grams or kilograms even in imperial-unit countries, and a calculator locked to ounces or pounds can't handle that directly. This site's price-per-ounce and price-per-pound pages already cover those specific imperial units; this page fills the generic and metric gap between them.
Can I compare a price per kilogram against a price per pound with this?
Not directly — convert one figure into the other unit first. One kilogram equals about 2.2046 pounds, so a rate given per kilogram needs to be divided by 2.2046 (or the pound-based rate multiplied by 2.2046) before the two numbers describe the same amount of product and can be compared honestly.
Does a lower price per unit weight always mean better value?
Only for the weight itself — it says nothing about quality, freshness, or how much of a bulk purchase you'll actually use before it spoils. A cheap rate on a large bag of a perishable specialty ingredient can still be the worse deal overall if a portion goes stale or unused before you get through it.
How is this different from the price-per-unit calculator on this site?
Price-per-unit divides a price by a count of discrete items — how many bottles, batteries, or bars are in a pack. This calculator instead divides by a continuous weight figure in whatever unit you supply, which is the right tool when what you're buying is measured by scale rather than counted piece by piece, like bulk coffee, spices, or grain.
