How this instrument works
US gallons trace back to English wine measure, which Parliament pinned at 231 cubic inches in 1707. That figure began life as a cylinder seven inches across and six inches deep — 230.907 cubic inches — nudged up to 231 so clerks could do arithmetic. Congress inherited that gallon and never replaced it. Once an inch became 25.4 mm in 1959, 231 cubic inches turned into 3.785411784 litres exactly, and one quart into 57.75 cubic inches, or 0.946352946 litres.
So this conversion is baked into vocabulary, not into any laboratory. Quart descends from Latin quartus through Old French quarte, meaning fourth part, and four quarts have made one gallon for as long as both words have existed in English. Practically, this pairing is American. Worked example — eight quart cans of paint
A painter prices out a stairwell. Shelf stock is quart cans, and her estimate calls for eight. She types 8 into Quarts (qt), and US gallons (gal) answers 2 — eight quarters of one gallon, nothing rounded away, because quarts were carved out of gallons by definition rather than measured against them.
Two is useful to know here, since two gallon cans hold that identical 462 cubic inches of paint and nearly always cost less; otherwise you pay for eight lids and eight labels. Kitchens hit this too: a stock recipe scaled to 8 qt drops into one two-gallon cambro with zero headroom gained or lost anywhere in that arithmetic.

Does this work for imperial quarts?
No, and mixing them is a costly slip. An imperial quart holds 1.1365225 litres, roughly 20% more than the US liquid quart's 0.946352946 litres. Four imperial quarts do make one imperial gallon of 4.54609 litres, so 0.25 is correct inside that system — but across systems an imperial quart works out to 0.30024 US gallons. If your figure came from British recipes or older Canadian spec sheets, settle which quart you have before dividing.
What about dry quarts of berries?
Different unit again. US dry quarts run 67.200625 cubic inches, near 1.101221 litres, sized from Winchester bushel measure instead of wine measure, and they turn up on produce baskets and berry tills. Four dry quarts do make one dry gallon, so 0.25 still holds inside dry measure, but dry gallons run 268.8025 cubic inches rather than 231. Never route dry quarts into liquid gallon answers — dry quarts are roughly 16% larger.
How many quarts, pints and fluid ounces sit in a gallon?
