How this instrument works

Race time improvement expresses the gap between two performances at the same distance as a single percentage: how much faster the new time is relative to the old one. The formula is a direct percentage-change calculation — ((old time − new time) ÷ old time) x 100 — applied to running (or any timed) performance rather than a price or a measurement.

A percentage is more useful than the raw time difference alone because it scales with the starting point: dropping a marathon from 4:30:00 to 4:20:00, a 10-minute gain, is a 3.7% improvement, while dropping a 5K from 30:00 to 20:00, also a 10-minute gain, is a 33.3% improvement — the same 10 minutes means something very different depending on how long the original effort was. Runners and coaches use the percentage figure specifically to compare improvement across different distances and training blocks on a common scale.

The calculation only needs two times over the same distance — a most recent race compared against a previous one, or a time trial compared against a benchmark from months earlier. It says nothing about why the time improved: better fitness, a faster course, cooler weather, or simply a better-paced race can all move the number, so it's best read alongside training-log context, not as a standalone fitness score.

Worked example — 30:00 down to 27:00

Enter a previous time of 30 and a new time of 27. Improvement = ((30 − 27) ÷ 30) x 100 = (3 ÷ 30) x 100 = 10.00% — a 10% faster time, whether those numbers represent minutes on a 5K, hours on a marathon, or any other consistent time unit.

Questions

What does a negative improvement percentage mean?

It means the new time was slower than the old one — the formula doesn't assume improvement happened. A previous time of 27 and a new time of 30, for instance, returns −11.11%, correctly flagging a slowdown rather than forcing a positive number. Off days, a tougher course, and heat all show up honestly as negative results.

Does it matter what time unit I use?

No, as long as both times use the same unit — minutes and minutes, or seconds and seconds, but not one of each. The percentage comes out identical either way because both the numerator and denominator scale together; entering 30 and 27 minutes gives the same 10.0% as entering 1800 and 1620 seconds.

Why is a 10-minute marathon improvement a smaller percentage than a 10-minute 5K improvement?

Because percentage improvement is measured relative to the starting time, and a marathon's starting time is much larger than a 5K's. Ten minutes off a 4:30:00 (270-minute) marathon is a 3.7% gain, while ten minutes off a 30:00 5K is a 33.3% gain — the same absolute time saved represents a much bigger relative jump on the shorter race.

Can I use this to compare improvement across different distances?

Only loosely — the percentage tells you how much faster you got at whatever single distance both times cover, so comparing a 5K improvement percentage against a marathon improvement percentage is comparing two different achievements, not a like-for-like ranking. For predicting how an improvement at one distance might carry over to another, this site's race-predictor applies Riegel's formula instead.

What counts as a meaningful improvement percentage between two races?

It depends heavily on starting fitness and training history — a beginner might see 10-20% improvements between early races as base fitness builds, while an experienced racer chasing a personal best is often fighting for gains under 1-2%. There's no universal benchmark; the number is most useful tracked over your own race history, not compared against someone else's.
