How this instrument works

A scale ratio of 1:N means one unit of length on the model, drawing, or map corresponds to N of that same unit in reality -- a 1:24 scale model represents something 24 times the model's own size, regardless of whether the underlying unit is inches, centimetres, or anything else, since the ratio itself is unitless. Because the scale is a plain ratio, this page's N field takes any number you type rather than offering a fixed list: model-making, architecture, engineering drawing, and cartography each use their own conventional scales for their own reasons, and no single dropdown could cover them all correctly.

A few named scales come up often enough to be worth knowing as reference points, though this page will compute any ratio, not just these. 1:24 is a common size for dollhouse miniatures and some model vehicles, one inch representing two feet of real size. 1:87, commonly called HO scale, is the most widely built model railroad scale in the world, standardized by the National Model Railroad Association. Paper topographic maps commonly use round scales like 1:24,000 or 1:100,000, where the United States Geological Survey has long published its standard quadrangle maps. Whatever ratio applies to a specific hobby or document, entering that number into Scale (the N in 1:N) computes the same way.

Worked example -- a 6-foot person at 1:24 scale

Questions

What does a scale of 1:N actually mean?

It means one unit of length on the model, drawing, or map equals N of that same unit in real life. A 1:24 scale model is 24 times smaller than the real object in every linear dimension, so a 72-inch person becomes a 3-inch figure -- the ratio applies to length, not area or volume, which shrink by N squared and N cubed respectively.

Why is the scale a free-entry number instead of a dropdown of named scales?

Because scale ratios are used across many unrelated fields -- model railroading, dollhouse building, architecture, engineering drawing, cartography -- each with its own conventional numbers, and no fixed list could include every ratio someone might need. What is HO scale and why 1:87?

What scale do dollhouses typically use?
