How this instrument works

A bead of caulk or sealant filling a joint is, geometrically, just a simple rectangular volume: length times width times depth. Sealant itself is sold in cylindrical cartridges rated by fluid ounce, so answering 'how many tubes do I need' means converting that joint volume and the cartridge's own volume into the same unit and dividing one by the other, rounded up to a whole cartridge.

The conversion between fluid ounces and cubic inches is exact, not approximate: one US fluid ounce equals 231 ÷ 128 cubic inches, or 1.8046875 in³ precisely, since the US gallon is legally defined as exactly 231 cubic inches and there are 128 fluid ounces in a gallon. Multiplying a cartridge's fluid-ounce rating by that factor gives its volume in cubic inches, ready to compare directly against the joint's own volume computed the same way.

10.1 fl oz is the standard US caulk cartridge size that most hardware-store tubes and manual caulking guns are built around, but it isn't universal — larger 'sausage pack' cartridges, commonly in the 20 to 29 fl oz range, and other specialty sizes exist for bulk or professional dispensing with a different type of gun. Adjust the Cartridge size field to match the actual product you're buying rather than assuming every tube is 10.1 fl oz.

Worked example — a 50 ft joint, 3/8 in wide and deep

Enter 50 into Joint length (ft), 0.375 into Joint width (in), 0.375 into Joint depth (in), and leave Cartridge size (fl oz) at its 10.1 default — a standard tube. Joint volume: (50 × 12) × 0.375 × 0.375 = 600 × 0.140625 = 84.375 in³.

Cartridge volume: 10.1 × 1.8046875 ≈ 18.2273 in³. Cartridges needed reads 5, since 84.375 ÷ 18.2273 ≈ 4.629, rounded up to the next whole cartridge — a partial tube still means buying the full next one.

Questions

Why 1.8046875 cubic inches per fluid ounce specifically?

Because it follows exactly from two fixed definitions: a US gallon is legally exactly 231 cubic inches, and a gallon contains exactly 128 fluid ounces, so one fluid ounce is 231 ÷ 128 = 1.8046875 cubic inches precisely — not a rounded approximation. This is the same underlying gallon definition this site's other gallon-based instruments use.

What is a 'sausage pack' cartridge?

A larger-format sealant cartridge, commonly in the 20 to 29 fl oz range, packaged in a flexible foil or plastic tube (resembling a sausage) rather than the rigid cardboard-and-plastic 10.1 fl oz tube most hardware-store caulking guns take. Sausage packs require a different, larger caulking gun designed for that format, and hold noticeably more sealant per cartridge — useful for bigger jobs where fewer, larger cartridges are more efficient than many small ones.

How much extra sealant should I buy for waste?

This calculator returns the theoretical exact volume only, with no waste margin built in — real application always loses some material to tooling the bead smooth, minor overfilling, and the small amount left in a tube that can't be fully dispensed. Buying one extra cartridge beyond the calculated count is a reasonable cushion for most single-joint projects, especially since the result already rounds up to a whole cartridge.

Does backer rod change this calculation?

Yes, indirectly — backer rod, a foam cord pressed into a deep joint before caulking, is meant to reduce how deep the actual sealant bead needs to be and to give the sealant a proper hourglass cross-section rather than filling the entire joint depth. If your joint uses backer rod, enter the reduced EFFECTIVE sealant depth (after the rod takes up the back portion of the joint) into Joint depth (in), not the joint's full physical depth.

Is 'caulk' the same thing as 'sealant'?

The terms are often used interchangeably in everyday language, and this calculator treats them the same way, but there's a technical distinction in the trade: 'caulk' traditionally refers to more rigid, less flexible fillers (like some acrylic latex products), while 'sealant' usually refers to more flexible, elastomeric products (like silicone or polyurethane) designed to accommodate ongoing joint movement. Either way, the volume-to-cartridge math here works identically regardless of which specific product you're using.
