How this instrument works
In 2015, a multidisciplinary panel of physicians and sleep researchers convened by the National Sleep Foundation reviewed the published evidence on sleep duration and voted, using a formal consensus method, on age-bracketed hour ranges rather than a single figure for every person. The panel split the lifespan into eight brackets, from newborns through adults over 65, because the biological case for more sleep in early childhood — largely tied to brain development — is genuinely different from the case for a working adult.
Each bracket carries both a lower and upper bound meant to cover most healthy people at that age, not a rigid target everyone must hit precisely. The published methodology actually distinguishes three zones per age group — a core 'recommended' range, a narrower 'may be appropriate' band just outside it, and a 'not recommended' zone beyond that — and what this calculator returns is the core recommended range, the zone with the broadest expert agreement.
A newborn's 14-to-17-hour recommendation and a senior's 7-to-8-hour one aren't measuring laziness versus resilience; they reflect how sleep's job changes with age, doing more of the heavy lifting for growth and neural wiring early on and settling into a narrower maintenance role later. Falling outside a bracket occasionally isn't automatically a problem — individual variation exists inside every one of these ranges too.

Worked example — three ages compared

A 70-year-old sits in the older-adult bracket, 7 to 8 hours, a slightly narrower range than the working-age one just below it. None of the three figures is a strict requirement; each is the zone the panel's evidence review found best supported for that age.

Why does the range narrow for older adults?
The panel's evidence review found less support for the wider ranges seen in younger brackets once someone passes 65, though the shift is modest — 7 to 8 hours instead of 7 to 9.
