Worked example — 7:00 wake-up, 15-minute fall-asleep buffer

Waking at 7:00 with a typical 15-minute buffer to fall asleep: 6 hours of sleep (4 cycles) needs 6 hours 15 minutes before the alarm. 7:00 minus 6:15 is 0:45 — a 12:45 AM bedtime in the very early hours of that same morning, not the night before, since 6 hours 15 minutes fits entirely between midnight and the 7:00 wake-up.

7.5 hours of sleep (5 cycles) needs 7 hours 45 minutes before the alarm, which crosses back over midnight: 7:00 minus 7:45 wraps to 23:15 — an 11:15 PM bedtime the night before.

9 hours of sleep (6 cycles) needs 9 hours 15 minutes before the alarm, crossing further back over midnight to 21:45 — a 9:45 PM bedtime the night before, the earliest of the three options.

Questions

Why does one bedtime option land after midnight while the others land before it?

It depends on how early the wake-up time is relative to that option's total duration (cycles × 90 minutes plus the fall-asleep buffer). For a 7:00 wake-up with a 15-minute buffer, only the shortest 6-hour option (4 cycles) is short enough to start after midnight and still finish by the alarm; the longer 7.5-hour and 9-hour options both need to start before midnight, so they land the night before. For an earlier wake-up time, even the 6-hour option can end up needing to start before midnight — there's no fixed rule; it comes out of the arithmetic for the specific wake-up time and buffer entered.
