Slow, careful climbing sits at 4.5 METs. General stair climbing — the pace most people use commuting through a train station or office building — is 6.8 METs. Fast, one-step-at-a-time climbing reaches 9.3 METs, and taking two steps at a time, which recruits more hip and glute muscle per stride, still lands at a demanding 7.5 METs. Each MET is a multiple of resting energy use, so 9.3 METs means your body is working over nine times harder than sitting still.
The calculator applies the standard exercise-science formula, kcal = MET x weight (kg) x duration (hours), and asks for duration in minutes because almost nobody climbs stairs for a clean hour — you enter however many minutes you actually spent, and the calculator divides by 60 before multiplying.
