This calculator starts from that one uncontested definition and one basic fact from photobiology — that UV dose is proportional to intensity multiplied by time, so a higher UV index delivers the same burning dose faster. Worked example — SPF 30 on a matching-UV day
You know your own skin burns in 15 minutes unprotected on a UV-index-6 day, and today is also UV index 6, with SPF 30 sunscreen applied: safe time = 15 x 30 x (6/6) = 15 x 30 x 1 = 450 minutes, or 7.5 hours — directly from SPF's own definition, since today's UV matches your baseline measurement exactly.
Now suppose today's UV index is higher, 9 instead of 6, with the same 15-minute baseline and SPF 30: safe time = 15 x 30 x (6/9) = 450 x 0.6667 = 300.0 minutes — correctly shorter than the matching-UV case, since more intense UV delivers the same cumulative burning dose faster.
