How this instrument works
A wall's gross area — length times height — is only the starting point for most real jobs, because doors and windows are openings, not surface, and paint, siding, drywall and insulation are only needed on the material actually left once those openings are cut out. Estimating from gross area alone routinely overbuys material, sometimes by a meaningful percentage on a wall with a large window or a double door.
This instrument computes the wall's gross area from its length and height, then subtracts the stated door area and window area directly, in one step: net area equals length times height, minus doors, minus windows. There is no separate subtraction to do by hand afterward — enter every measurement once and the net figure comes back ready to use.
This net square footage is what a paint calculator's coverage-per-gallon figure, a siding order's per-square-foot pricing, or a drywall sheet count should actually be measured against, since none of those materials go on top of a door or window opening. For a wall with several doors or windows of different sizes, add their individual areas together first and enter that combined total into the door or window field.

Worked example — a 20 ft by 8 ft wall with a door and window
Enter 20 into Wall length (ft), 8 into Wall height (ft), 21 into Door area to subtract (sq ft) and 15 into Window area to subtract (sq ft) — a typical exterior wall with one standard door and one window. Gross area comes to 20 × 8 = 160 sq ft.
Net wall area (sq ft) reads 124.00 — 160 minus the 21 sq ft door minus the 15 sq ft window. That 124 sq ft figure, not the 160 sq ft gross wall, is what a paint or siding estimate for this wall should actually be based on.
Questions
What if a wall has more than one door or window?
Add each opening's individual area together first, then enter that combined total into Door area to subtract (sq ft) or Window area to subtract (sq ft). A wall with two identical 15 sq ft windows, for example, would need 30 entered into the window field, not 15.
How do I find a door or window's area if I don't already know it?
Multiply its width by its height, in feet, the same rectangle-area formula used for the wall itself. A standard interior door, roughly 3 ft wide by 7 ft tall, works out to about 21 sq ft, which is why that figure is this instrument's default.
Does this account for trim, baseboards or crown molding?
No — this instrument computes wall area only, from length, height and opening subtractions. Trim, baseboards and molding are typically estimated separately by linear footage around the room's perimeter rather than as part of the wall's square footage.
Should the wall height include the area above a dropped ceiling?
No — use the actual finished, visible wall height, floor to ceiling or floor to top plate, rather than the full structural height if a portion is hidden behind a dropped or suspended ceiling, since that hidden section isn't being painted, sided or drywalled.
Can this go negative if the openings are larger than the wall?
Mathematically yes, if the combined door and window area entered exceeds the wall's gross area — but that would mean the openings were measured or entered incorrectly, since a real wall's openings can never physically exceed its own total area. A negative result is a signal to double-check the numbers entered.
How is this different from the site's plain square footage calculator?
The plain square footage instrument computes an unmodified rectangle's gross area, length times width, with no subtractions. This instrument starts from that same gross-area math for a wall specifically, then subtracts door and window openings to leave the net surface area that paint, siding or drywall material actually needs to cover.
