How this instrument works
Wins Above Replacement condenses a position player's entire season into one number: roughly how many more wins that player was worth than a hypothetical freely available replacement-level player would have been at the same position over the same playing time. It's designed to let you compare a slick-fielding shortstop against a slugging first baseman on a single scale, by converting every kind of contribution — hitting, base-running, defense, positional difficulty — into the same underlying unit of runs, then translating total runs into wins.
The formula sums six already-computed components. Batting runs capture park-adjusted offensive value above league average. Base-running runs credit stolen bases and extra bases taken. Fielding runs (typically built from advanced defensive metrics like UZR or DRS) capture runs saved or cost by defense. The positional adjustment credits or debits a player based on how demanding their position is defensively — shortstops and catchers get a bonus for scarcity and difficulty, designated hitters take a penalty. League adjustment calibrates for the run-scoring environment of that player's specific league that season, and replacement runs establish the baseline — typically around 20 runs per 600 plate appearances — that separates a bench/replacement-level player from an average one.
Like the real published FanGraphs statistic, this calculator combines already-modeled sub-components rather than deriving WAR from raw box-score counting stats directly. That's inherent to what WAR actually is: each input (batting runs, fielding runs, and so on) is itself the output of a separate, more detailed model, and WAR's real innovation is combining all of them into one comparable figure, not calculating any single piece from scratch. This version covers position players only — pitcher WAR uses a separate formula built around FIP and leverage that isn't included here.

Worked example — a solidly above-average everyday player
A player finishes a season with +15 batting runs, +2 base-running runs, +3 fielding runs, a −2 positional adjustment (reflecting a slightly less demanding defensive position), no league adjustment, and +20 replacement runs for a full season's playing time, in a year where runs-per-win sits at 10. Summing the components gives 15 + 2 + 3 − 2 + 0 + 20 = 38 total runs above replacement.
Dividing by that season's runs-per-win converts the runs figure into wins: 38 / 10 = 3.80 WAR. By common sabermetric convention, a WAR in that range describes a solidly above-average everyday regular — clearly more valuable than a replacement-level bench player, but short of the 5-plus WAR territory typically associated with an MVP-caliber season.
Questions
Where do the batting runs, fielding runs, and other inputs actually come from?
They're pre-computed advanced metrics published by sabermetric sites like FanGraphs and Baseball Reference — batting runs typically come from a linear-weights offensive model (like wRAA), fielding runs from defensive systems like UZR or DRS, and so on. This calculator doesn't derive those components from raw box-score stats; it combines already-modeled figures the way the real published formula does.
Why does a positional adjustment exist at all?
Defensive positions vary enormously in difficulty and scarcity of players who can handle them well — shortstop and catcher are demanding and hard to fill, while first base and designated hitter are comparatively easy defensively. The positional adjustment credits players at tougher positions and debits those at easier ones, so a good defensive shortstop and a good defensive first baseman aren't valued identically just because their raw fielding numbers look similar.
What counts as a "good" WAR value?
Common sabermetric convention treats roughly 0-1 WAR as a replacement-level or bench player, 2-3 as a solid everyday regular, 4-5 as an all-star-caliber season, and 6 or more as an MVP-caliber year. These bands are informal guidelines rather than strict cutoffs, but they're widely used as a quick way to translate a WAR figure into plain-language player quality.
Why does runs-per-win change from season to season?
It's tied to the league's overall run-scoring environment in a given year — when more runs are being scored league-wide, it takes more marginal runs to produce one additional win, and when scoring is down, fewer runs are needed per win. Sabermetric sites recalculate and publish this figure each season based on actual league-wide run totals.
Does this calculator work for pitchers too?
No — this is specifically the position-player formula. Pitcher WAR is built from a different set of inputs entirely, centered on Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) and adjusted for leverage and other pitching-specific factors, which follow a separate calculation not covered by this tool.
