How this instrument works

Football's energy cost swings enormously with intensity, which is why the 2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities gives it three distinct MET codes rather than one. Competitive soccer or football — the kind played at pace with real tactical pressure, the level a World Cup match is played at — sits at 9.5 METs, reflecting the constant sprinting, changes of direction, and high heart rate the format demands. Casual, recreational football drops to 7.0 METs, and walking football, a growing lower-impact format designed for older or less mobile players, sits at just 3.5 METs — a third of the competitive rate.

The calculator uses the standard kcal = MET x weight (kg) x duration (hours) formula, with duration entered in minutes and converted to hours internally. It defaults to 90 minutes, a regulation football match under IFAB's Laws of the Game (the body that sets the rules FIFA competitions play by), but works for any duration — a 20-minute training drill, a 60-minute five-a-side game, or a full 90-minute match with stoppage time approximated as part of the total.

Because the formula treats the whole session as one continuous intensity, it's a simplification of how a real match actually unfolds — players sprint, jog, and stand between plays rather than sustaining one constant effort. Worked example — competitive match, 70 kg, 90 minutes

A 70 kg midfielder plays a full 90-minute competitive match at genuine match intensity — the Compendium's 9.5-MET competitive soccer code. Ninety minutes is 1.5 hours, so the calculation is 9.5 MET x 70 kg x 1.5 hours = 997.5 kcal for the full match.

The same player at the same weight and duration, but in a casual recreational game instead, drops to 7.0 METs: 7.0 x 70 x 1.5 = 735.0 kcal — 262.5 fewer calories across 90 minutes purely from playing at a lower gear, even covering roughly the same pitch.

How long is a regulation football match?

A standard match runs two equal halves of 45 minutes each under IFAB's Laws of the Game, for 90 minutes of regulation play, plus a half-time interval and any stoppage time the referee adds for delays. Does playing position change how many calories I burn?
