How this instrument works

Cross stitch fabric like Aida cloth is woven — or, for evenweave, counted — at a specific density: a set number of stitchable squares or thread pairs per inch, called its count. Divide the pattern's stitch total by that number and you get the finished design size in inches: 140 stitches across on 14-count fabric works out to exactly 10 inches of stitched design, because 14 stitches fit into every inch of that fabric.

That finished-design figure isn't the size to actually cut, though — stitchers need blank fabric around the design to load it into a hoop or Q-snap, hand it to a framer, or block it without the needlework itself getting caught in a clamp. A margin added to all four sides, most commonly 3 inches per side for a typical project, is standard practice recommended by fabric suppliers and stitching guilds alike, which is why this calculator adds twice the margin (once per side) to each dimension.

The same design stitched on a denser fabric comes out physically smaller, and on a coarser one comes out larger, because that density controls how many stitches pack into each inch — the stitch total itself, set by the pattern, never changes. That's why fabric size has to be recalculated any time the fabric count changes, even for an identical pattern.

Fabric count is stitches per inch of the chosen fabric. Margin is added once to each of the two opposite sides of every dimension (hence the ×2), giving blank border on all four edges for hooping, stretching or framing.
  • Enter Stitch count — width and Stitch count — height from your pattern's chart or pattern key (the number of stitches across and down the design).
  • Enter Fabric count (holes/threads per inch) — the count of the Aida or evenweave fabric you're using (14-count and 16-count are common Aida counts).
  • Enter Margin on each side (in) — how much blank fabric border you want beyond the stitched design; 3 in per side is the standard recommendation for hooping and framing.
  • Read Fabric width needed (in) and Fabric height needed (in) — the total piece size to cut.
  • If stitching over two threads on evenweave (a common technique that halves the effective count), enter half the fabric's printed count as your Fabric count value.

Worked example — a 100×80-stitch pattern on 14-count Aida

Enter 100 into Stitch count — width, 80 into Stitch count — height, 14 into Fabric count, and 3 into Margin on each side (in). Fabric width needed reads 100 ÷ 14 + 2×3 = 7.1429 + 6 = 13.1429 in, and Fabric height needed reads 80 ÷ 14 + 6 = 5.7143 + 6 = 11.7143 in.

The finished stitched design itself comes out to 7.1429 × 5.7143 in — the 100 ÷ 14 and 80 ÷ 14 figures before the margin was added — so cutting a 13.1429 × 11.7143 in piece of 14-count Aida leaves roughly 3 inches of clean fabric on every side of the finished design for mounting.

Questions

What does '14-count' fabric actually mean?

The number is stitches per inch: 14-count Aida has 14 evenly spaced holes across every inch, so a design of a given stitch total comes out physically smaller on 14-count fabric than on, say, 11-count, which packs fewer, larger stitches into the same inch. Aida is woven with that density built into its grid, which is what makes counted cross stitch possible without a printed pattern on the fabric itself.

Why do I need a margin at all — can't I just cut the design size?

A hoop, Q-snap or stretcher bar frame needs fabric to grip beyond the stitched area, and a framer needs excess to wrap around a mounting board — cutting exactly to the design size leaves nothing to hold onto during stitching or finishing. Three inches per side is the standard recommendation from fabric suppliers and stitching guilds for a typical small-to-medium project.

What if I'm stitching over two threads on evenweave fabric?

Stitching over two threads means each cross stitch spans two woven threads instead of one, which effectively halves the fabric's usable density — 28-count evenweave stitched over two behaves, size-wise, like 14-count Aida. Enter that effective figure — half the number printed on the fabric's label — into Fabric count so the calculated size matches how the piece will actually be stitched.

Does a bigger margin ever make sense than 3 inches?

Yes — larger finished pieces, or pieces headed to a professional framer rather than a simple hoop display, often warrant a bigger margin, sometimes 4–5 inches per side, to give the framer more fabric to work with when stretching over a larger board. Enter whatever margin your specific project or framer requests; 3 inches is simply the common default for smaller pieces.

The same pattern looks like a different size on two different fabrics I own — why?

Because the stitch total from the pattern never changes, but the fabric's count does — a 100-stitch-wide design is always 100 stitches wide, but it measures 100 ÷ 11 ≈ 9.1 in on 11-count fabric versus 100 ÷ 18 ≈ 5.6 in on 18-count. A higher number there means smaller, denser finished stitching from the identical pattern.
