How this instrument works

Two things inflate a simple window-width measurement into the real fabric yardage a project needs. The first is fullness ratio: a curtain hung flat at exactly the window's width looks skimpy and doesn't gather properly when drawn, so panels are cut 2 to 3 times wider than the window they'll cover — a 2x ratio is the standard look, 2.5x reads as fuller and more custom, 3x is heavily gathered. The second is the per-panel-type sewing allowance: rod-pocket, grommet/pleated, and tab-top headings each consume a different amount of extra fabric length at the top and bottom for hems and the rod channel itself.

This calculator chains both together. Panel width comes from window width × fullness ratio, plus a small seam allowance. That panel width, divided by your fabric roll's width and rounded up, tells you how many fabric widths need to be sewn together to reach that panel width. Multiply that width count by the finished curtain length plus the heading/hem allowance for your chosen panel type, and divide by 36 inches per yard, to land on total yardage.

This follows the same step-by-step method fabric retailers and sewing guides publish for calculating drapery yardage. One thing it doesn't account for: if your chosen fabric has a repeating pattern, matching that pattern across seams and panels typically requires buying meaningfully more than the plain-yardage figure here — budget roughly one extra pattern repeat per panel width as a rule of thumb, and round up to the nearest half yard regardless.

Worked example — rod-pocket panels for a 48-inch window

A 48-inch window, 2x fullness, rod-pocket heading, 5-inch rod circumference, 84-inch finished length, and 54-inch-wide fabric: panel width = 48 × 2 + 2 = 98 inches. Rod-pocket allowance = 8.5 + 5 ÷ 2 = 11 inches, so the cut length per fabric width is 84 + 11 = 95 inches.

Fabric widths needed = ceil(98 ÷ 54) = 2, since one 54-inch width can't cover a 98-inch panel. Total yardage = 95 × 2 ÷ 36 = 5.28 yards — round up to 5.5 yards when placing the actual fabric order, leaving a small margin for cutting error.

Questions

What fullness ratio should I use for my curtains?

2x fullness is the standard, most common choice and works well for most rooms and fabrics. Step up to 2.5x for a fuller, more custom-looking gather, especially with lighter or sheer fabrics that need more volume to read as substantial. Reserve 3x for heavily pleated, formal styles or very lightweight fabric — on a thick or stiff fabric, 3x fullness can be difficult to gather cleanly and may look bulky rather than elegant.

Do I need extra fabric if my chosen fabric has a repeating pattern?

Yes — this calculator's yardage figure assumes plain or non-repeating fabric. A patterned fabric needs its motifs aligned across every seam and across neighboring panels, which typically means buying an extra pattern repeat's worth of fabric per panel width beyond the plain calculation. Pattern repeats commonly run anywhere from about 6 to 27 inches, so check your specific fabric's repeat length and add accordingly before ordering.

What if my fabric roll is narrower than the required panel width?

That's exactly what the "fabric widths needed" figure accounts for — when one roll width can't cover the full panel width, the calculator rounds up to however many widths must be sewn together side by side to reach it. A 98-inch panel width on 54-inch fabric, for instance, needs 2 full widths seamed together, even though 2 widths (108 inches) is more fabric than strictly required.

What's the practical difference between rod-pocket, grommet, and tab-top headings?

Rod-pocket curtains have a sewn channel the rod slides directly through, giving a soft, gathered look but making the curtain harder to slide open and closed smoothly. Grommet (eyelet) curtains use metal rings punched through the top that the rod passes through, sliding easily and hanging in crisp, even folds. Tab-top curtains use fabric loops sewn to the top edge, giving a more casual, exposed-rod look. Each needs a different amount of extra fabric at the top to construct properly, which is why the heading/hem allowance changes by type.

Should I round the final yardage up when ordering?

Yes — round up to at least the nearest half yard beyond the calculated figure to leave margin for squaring off cuts, minor measuring error, and any pattern-matching waste. Fabric stores typically cut in half-yard increments anyway, so ordering the exact decimal yardage this calculator returns usually isn't even possible at checkout.
