How this instrument works
A pleated skirt needs far more fabric across its width than the finished waist measurement, because each pleat folds a strip of extra fabric back on itself to create its shape — the wider or deeper the pleats, the more fabric that folding consumes. Rather than measuring and summing every individual pleat's fabric allowance separately, this calculator uses a single fullness multiplier for the whole waist: multiply the waist measurement by that multiplier, and the folding math for every pleat around the waist collapses into one number.
Knife pleats (pleats that all face the same direction) and box pleats (pairs of knife pleats facing away from each other, forming a flat panel down the middle) consume fabric at different rates, so this calculator offers two fullness multipliers: 2× for knife pleats, 3× for box pleats, as simple, commonly used round-number starting ratios. Real sewing patterns vary this figure by fabric weight, pleat depth and desired fullness — some knife-pleat patterns call for as little as 2× and others as much as 3× or more — so treat the multiplier here as a solid planning starting point, not an unbreakable law of pleating.
Fabric length is separate and much simpler: it's just the finished skirt length plus a hem allowance (fabric folded under at the bottom) and a seam allowance (fabric consumed by the waistband seam at the top), added straight across with no multiplier, since length isn't affected by how the pleats fold.

Worked example — a 28in-waist knife-pleated skirt
A 28in waist, knife pleats, a 22in finished skirt length, a 1in hem allowance and a 1in seam allowance. Fabric width = 28 × 2 + 1 = 57 in. Fabric length = 22 + 1 + 1 = 24 in — so the flat piece to cut is 57 in wide by 24 in long, before any pleating is folded in.
Switch the same skirt to box pleats instead and the width jumps to 28 × 3 + 1 = 85 in for the same waist — box pleats' extra fold (two knife pleats sewn back-to-back) is exactly why they need noticeably more fabric across the width for the same finished waist size.
Questions
Why do box pleats need more fabric than knife pleats?
A box pleat is essentially two knife pleats folded toward each other, back-to-back, which is why this calculator gives it a higher fullness multiplier (3×) than a plain knife pleat (2×) — each box pleat consumes roughly half again as much fabric as a knife pleat to create its flat center panel and two hidden folds.
Is the 2× / 3× fullness ratio a hard rule?
No — it's a commonly used round-number starting point, not a fixed law of sewing. Real patterns vary the multiplier depending on fabric weight (thicker fabric often needs less fullness to look right), pleat depth, and the finished look you're after; treat this calculator's output as a solid first estimate and adjust with a test swatch if your fabric behaves unusually.
Does the fabric width include the seam allowance for closing the skirt?
Yes — the seam allowance you enter is added once to the pleated width total, covering the seam where the fabric closes at the back (or wherever the skirt's closure sits). If your pattern needs a separate allowance on both edges, add that second allowance in yourself before entering the total.
How do I convert the fabric width result into yards or meters of fabric to buy?
This calculator gives the flat cut piece's width and length in inches; how much fabric yardage that translates to at the store depends on your fabric's roll width — if your fabric is narrower than the calculated width, you'll need to piece two panels together (adding extra for a seam) or buy proportionally more length to get a wide enough single cut, so check your chosen fabric's roll width before shopping.
What if my waist measurement changes between the top and bottom of a flared pleated skirt?
This calculator assumes a straight (non-flared) pleated panel from waist to hem, which is the standard construction for most knife- and box-pleated skirts. A deliberately flared or A-line pleated skirt needs pattern-drafting beyond a single width-and-length calculation, since the pleats themselves would need to widen going down the skirt.
