How this instrument works

The figures here come from a single study — Dunson, Baird & Colombo, published in Obstetrics & Gynecology in 2004 — that followed 782 couples across seven European natural family planning centers and recorded how many conceived within 12 menstrual cycles, roughly a year of trying. The study grouped results by the woman's age at the start: 19-26, 27-34, and 35-39. Within those bands, this calculator reports the population-average share who conceived within a year — about 92% for 19-26, about 86-87% for 27-34 (86.5% is used here as the band's midpoint), and about 82% for 35-39.

This is a population statistic, not a personal forecast. It describes what happened, on average, across hundreds of couples in one study conducted decades ago in a specific set of clinics — it says nothing about any one person's actual fertility, which is shaped by individual factors this calculator has no way to see: ovulatory health, prior pregnancies, partner fertility, underlying conditions, and plain chance. Two people the same age can have very different real odds even though this tool would show them the identical number.

The study only enrolled women aged 18 to 40, so its age bands run from 19 to 39. Entered ages outside that range simply return whichever band's value is nearest — the 19-26 figure for anyone younger, the 35-39 figure for anyone older — as a rough placeholder, not a real estimate for that age. Fertility is well documented to keep declining past 39, and this tool has no data-backed number to offer beyond the range the source study actually covered.

Worked example — three ages, three bands

A 24-year-old falls in the 19-26 band, so the calculator returns the study's population average for that band: about 92% of couples in that age group conceived within roughly a year of trying.

A 30-year-old falls in the 27-34 band instead, returning about 86.5% — the band's reported range was roughly 86-87%, with 86.5% used here as the midpoint. It's a modest drop from the youngest band, but the study still found the large majority of couples in this age range conceived within a year.

A 37-year-old falls in the 35-39 band, returning about 82%. The decline visibly accelerates in this band compared to the earlier two — but 82% still means most couples in the study at this age conceived naturally within about a year.

What does 'within 12 cycles' actually mean?

A menstrual cycle is roughly a month, so 12 cycles is roughly a year of trying to conceive. The study tracked, for each age band, what fraction of couples achieved a pregnancy within that window — it is not a measure of the chance of conceiving in any single cycle, but a cumulative rate across about a year of attempts.

Why does the age range stop at 39?

Because that's the oldest age the source study enrolled — participants ranged from 18 to 40 at study entry, giving usable age bands from 19 to 39. Fertility is well documented to continue declining after 39, but this calculator has no data-backed figure to offer past that point, so it simply returns the nearest band's value as a placeholder rather than inventing a number for ages outside the study.

What happens if I enter an age below 19 or above 39?

The calculator returns the value from whichever band is nearest — the 19-26 figure for ages under 19, the 35-39 figure for ages over 39. That's a simplification of the tool, not a real estimate for those ages; the underlying study simply didn't collect data outside its 19-39 range.

Does male age factor into this number?

No — this calculator only looks up the female age band from the source study. The same study did find that male age became a more significant factor for couples in their late 30s and older, but that effect isn't modeled here; this tool reports only the female-age-banded population averages.

Should I use this instead of talking to a doctor about fertility concerns?

No. This is a single historical statistic, not a fertility assessment. If you have questions about your own fertility — whether you're trying to conceive, have been trying for a while without success, or have a condition that might affect fertility — a clinician can evaluate your actual situation in a way a population average from one 2004 study cannot.
