How this instrument works
Insulation is sold by the roll or batt pack, each rated to cover a certain square footage at a specific R-value and thickness — not by a universal, one-size-fits-all coverage number. This calculator takes the area you need to cover, adds a waste allowance for cutting around joists, wiring, and odd corners, and divides by your product's actual coverage rate to tell you how many packs to buy.
Coverage per roll varies enormously by R-value and manufacturer — a higher-R, thicker batt pack covers noticeably less square footage per package than a thinner, lower-R one, even when both are similarly sized bundles on the shelf. The default of 100 sq ft per roll shown here is illustrative only; the real number for your product is printed on its package label, and using the wrong figure will throw the whole estimate off.
The waste percentage exists because insulation rarely fits a space in whole, uncut pieces — attics have joists and rafters, walls have wiring and outlets, and every cut piece leaves an offcut that may or may not be reusable. A 10% allowance is a common starting point for a straightforward rectangular space; tighter, more cut-up areas often warrant 15% or more.

Worked example — a 500 sq ft attic
Set Area to insulate to 500 sq ft, Coverage per roll to 100 sq ft — an illustrative figure; always check your actual product's label, since coverage varies enormously by R-value and manufacturer — and Waste allowance to 10%. Area with waste = 500 × 1.10 = 550 sq ft; rolls needed = ceil(550 ÷ 100) = 6.
Compare that to a real R-13 fiberglass batt pack rated at 88.75 sq ft coverage over a larger 1,200 sq ft wall area: area with waste = 1,320 sq ft, and rolls needed = ceil(1,320 ÷ 88.75) = ceil(14.87) = 15 packs — nearly two and a half times the area needing more than double the packs, since a higher-coverage default doesn't carry over to every real product.
Questions
Where do I find my insulation's actual coverage per roll?
Check the package label — every batt or roll product prints its coverage area, often listed as square feet per bag or bundle, alongside its R-value and thickness. Coverage varies enormously between products: a higher R-value batt is thicker and heavier, so a package covers meaningfully less square footage than a thinner, lower-R product even at a similar physical bundle size. Never assume one product's coverage rate applies to another.
Why does the calculator round up instead of giving an exact decimal?
Because insulation is sold in whole rolls or batt packs — a store won't sell you 14.87 packs. Rounding up ensures you buy enough to fully cover the area after the waste allowance, even if that means a little leftover material on the final pack. This is standard practice across bag-yield and coverage-rate calculators for building materials, from paint to gravel to insulation.
How much waste allowance should I use?
10% is a reasonable default for a simple, mostly-rectangular space with few obstructions. Attics and walls full of joists, rafters, wiring, plumbing, and irregular framing typically need more — 15% or higher isn't unusual for a genuinely cut-up space. If you're insulating a large, open, unobstructed area, you may be able to use less; the right number depends on how much cutting your specific job requires.
Does this calculator account for different R-values in the same job?
No — it assumes one coverage rate for the whole area you enter. If part of your project uses a different R-value or product, say R-30 in the attic and R-13 in the walls, run the calculator separately for each area and product using that product's own coverage-per-roll figure each time, then add the results together for a total pack count.
Is coverage per roll the same as square footage per bag on blown-in insulation?
No — this calculator is built for batt and roll insulation, where a package covers a fixed square footage at a fixed thickness. Blown-in loose-fill insulation, like cellulose or fiberglass, is sold by the bag and rated for a certain coverage area at a certain settled depth, which is a related but different calculation — check the specific bag-yield chart printed on that product's packaging instead.
