How this instrument works

This page works differently from the other toxicity calculators on this site, deliberately. For grapes, raisins, and tamarinds, no reliable dose-response relationship with dogs has ever been established: some dogs have developed acute kidney failure after eating just a few grapes, while other dogs have eaten much larger amounts with no apparent effect. Wegenast et al. 2022 and Coyne et al. 2023 (both Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care) point to tartaric acid as the likely toxic principle, but its concentration varies too unpredictably between individual grapes, vineyards, and processing methods for a real dose formula to exist.

Because of that, treat any known or suspected ingestion of grapes, raisins, or tamarinds as an emergency worth an immediate call to your veterinarian or an animal poison control hotline — regardless of how many were eaten, and regardless of what the ratio below shows. This is not a page where a low computed number means "probably fine"; it means "we don't have a number that means that."

Reading the ratio — it is context, not a verdict

A 50 lb dog eats 5 raisins: 5 ÷ 50 = 0.1 per lb, landing exactly on Merck's own rough heuristic of “more than 1 grape or raisin per 10 lb body weight may pose a risk.” That match is informational, not reassuring or alarming on its own — the call to your vet or poison control should happen regardless of where the ratio lands.

A 20 lb small dog eats 10 grapes: 10 ÷ 20 = 0.5 per lb, well above the heuristic — and still, the correct response is the same immediate call, not a more urgent version of a decision you'd otherwise skip.

A 70 lb large dog eats just 1 raisin: 1 ÷ 70 ≈ 0.0143 per lb, far below the heuristic. This is deliberately not framed as a “low risk” result — isolated case reports describe severe kidney injury after very small ingestions in some dogs, so a low ratio here is not a substitute for calling your vet or poison control.

What is the toxic substance in grapes and raisins?
